HARRIS, HOLLEMON, LANCASTER, AND WHITE

In the perspective of English genealogists of old, the interconnections between some of the descendants of Thomas Harris, d. 1688, and Robert Lancaster Sr. would have invariably arose from connecting points in common, both geographical and familial. In the latter case, the marriage of Elizabeth Harris to Samuel Lancaster, son of Robert Lancaster Sr., is the focal point, which suggests a close association between her family and that of the said Thomas Harris. It was most usual for those connected “down the line” to trace a common origin to siblings, in what follows, that is, to John Harris, bapt. in 1624, in Wiveliscombe, Somerset, and, conjecturally, to Thomas Harris. They would have been very closely related to Thomas Harris, d. 1672, as their families intertwined in numerous associations in common.

English emmigrants to “early” Virginia, of the “middling order”, were often of the same English locality, and they recreated their parish system in their promised land, settling alongside their kin; the English custom of centuries past. They spoke in their regional dialect (of the Gloucesershire/Somerset area of the Bristol Basin in the instance of many of this account); unintelligible, both to other colonists, and to “modern ears”. They sought to escape the tyranny of successive monarchal regimes, and the threat of their torture chanbers, which hung over them as the sword of Damocles; as did the power of the hierarchy above them (the synonomous landlord/magistrate class), who demanded conformity to the State religion, which sanctified, they claimed, the God-given “order of things”. Thus, power was vested in those who were immeasureably more wealthy than the majority. Most emmigrants sought to establish a land of the free, and, it is a matter of opinion, whether this dream was eventually successful, or whether it created, ironically (mirroring the English system of old), “a wasteland of the free”.

Connections to the Gwaltney and Lancaster families identify a Mathew Harris whose died in 1798, and connections to to the Moorlands identify the Mathew Harris who died in Greene Co., GA, bef. Nov. 1, 1813. An earlier Mathew Harris is also recorded. The close kinship relationship between the Harris/Hollemon families will be given. Traditional presumptions of chronology will be challenged.

A KINSHIP MATRIX

Kinship provided mutual support in times of need. The “settler class” were not isolated individual or families, which could not have survived the hardship of early Virginia. They were, as English monarchs, not as created by Hollywood.

      THOMAS HARRIS

1.1.1.2. THOMAS HARRIS, d. 1688. A “Harris researcher of old” comments that chronologies pertaining to certain ancestors need to be more feasible. If, for example, the Joel Harris who m. Martha Barham can be taken to have been born ca. 1750 (his younger brother, Benjamin, married in 1781), then his mother, Avis, would be expected to have been born no earlier than 1710 (and probably between 1715 and 1720); chronologies that suggest the age of her parents. As with many single-family research projects, the construction of pedigrees is filled with successive parents being aged 40-50 years, suggestive of the gap-filling of a missing generation.

1.1.1.2.1. Robert Harris (b. 1670-1674; d. 1740). The Will of Thomas Harris stated that is son, “Robert Harris may dwell with John Fulgham three years”, probably meaning until the age of 21, as the English custom, but could have been aged 18, suggesting a birth date of 1670-1674, which makes it feasible for him to have had a son, Mathew, born ca. 1700, legatee in the Gibbins Will of 1721.
      1.1.1.2.1.1. Mathew Harris (b. ca. 1700).
1.1.1.2.1.2. Michael Harris (b. ca. 1700), witnessed the Will of Thomas Crafts, who made a bequest to his sons, Thomas, John, and Samuel; daus. Martha Brantley and Elizabeth Tewell (Tuell). Other witnesses: Thomas Hillyard, and Hugh Edwards. (Dated: Oct. 29, 1722. Rec. July 24, 1727, p. 34). By this construction, it may have been him who had a son, Mathew, who married Sarah Cooke by 1762. Samuel Crafts appraised the estate of Elizabeth Holleman,* with Arthur Crocker and Josiah Holleman. (Rec. March 26, 1739, p. 224). Samuel Crafts was th exec. of the Will of Mary Briggs: Leg. dau. Elizabeth Thorpe, “the money in the hands of Col. Bridger”, son Benjamin Bell, dau. Ann Crafts. Wit. James Bell, William Cogin, James Grisard. (Rec. June 26, 1727, p. 33). Josiah Holleman* appraised the estate of Robert Harris, d. 1740.
*Elizabeth Wilson, wife of Joseph Holleman Jr., dau. of Thomas Wilson, son of James Wilson (who witnessed the Will of Thomas Harris, d. 1712, son of Thomas Harris, d. 1672), and Honour, dau. of John Goodrich Jr., and Ann, dau. of Edward Bechinoe, and relict of Robert Kae. James Wilson’s son, William, witnessed the Will of John Scott (grandson of a trading partner of Thomas Harris, d. 1672), with Thomas Harris, d.1729/30. (See previous posts). John Goodrich Jr. witnessed the Will of Ann (Moore) White, of 1742.
Joseph Holleman Jr. was the brother of Arthur Holleman, brother-in-law of John Harris, d. 1772.

      1. Philip Cooke, mariner, b. 1589, of Bristol.
1.1. William Cooke, bapt. March 25, 1613, St. Augustine Parish, Bristol; d. Nov. 10, 1679, in Surry Co., Virginia.

A codicil mentioned grandsons: George Carter, John White, (Moore) Thomas White, William White, Mary White, land adjoining Thomas Carter. At IOW Court on Jan. 24, 1714, “the last Will and Testament of Mr. George Moore was presented my Magdalen Carter one of the Exc. and proved by the Oath of Lawrence Baker, and the Codicil by the Oaths of the Witnesses”.

Williams* one thousand pounds …when he shall come to the age of eighteen and if should die before he shall come to age I give his brother John Williams shall have”. That is, a (Williams) grandson was born after 1692. His other (White) grandsons had presumably been born before 1692, perhaps between 1687 – 1690. This would suggest that their mother, Ann, was born ca. 1665, which would stretch the limits to her having a dau. born 1710, a proposed wife of John Harris, whose children were born ca. 1745-1755.

1.3.1. Mary Harris, m. Henry Harris, perhaps the son of Edward Harris and Mary Thorpe? (1. Edward Harris Sr., m. Mary Turner. 1.1. Edward Harris, b. ca. 1690, m. Mary, dau. of *Timothy Thorpe).

Then, who was John Harris? The witnesses to his Will were likely to have been the Simon Harris, grandson of George Harris, and Jesse Jones, who witnessed a deed of Simon’s father. Thus, it can be speculated that John Harris, b. ca. 1700, was a grandson of Thomas Harris, d. 1688, but by which son? The second witness to his Will, Jesse Jones, is of partricular interest. He and Samuel Barlow witnessed the Will of Elisha Crocker, son of Benjamin Crocker. (R. June 11, 1761, p. 177). This clearly places him in the “circle” of the Harris/Lancasters, as heretofore decribed. He and Thomas Jones were names as brothers-in-law in the Will of Arthur Whitehead, rec. May 11, 1758, p. 257. Thus, this contention gains momentum.

1.Arthur Whitehead, Will dated Feb. 6, 1748, m. Patience, dau. of Joseph Newsom and Juliana Pope, in Southampton Co. Patience was named as a daughter in her father’s Will of March 16, 1766, in St. Luke Parish, Southampton.

                                  1. Very nice work Michael!  You work abounds with names of interest, all with connections to the family of Harris Group 4.  Such names include Holleman, Bailey, Chambers, Lancaster and White.  My South Carolina Harris ancestors include the Hollemons, who almost certainly migrated from North Carolina.  You mention that kinships groups migrate together, a continuation of ancient family connections.  The names you mention are certainly connected anciently and even prior to the Conquest.

According to the Testa de Nevill we capture three of these kinsmen (Lancaster, White, Harris) at Great and Little Eccleston whereby the tenant-in-chief William Lancaster gave from the lands of his tenants named William Blundus, Ralph de Eccliston, Walter Fitz Swein, and Geoffrey Arbalaster.  Blundus, derived from de Albini, became White in England.  Ralph and Geoffrey are the grandchildren of Geoffrey de Eccleston aka de Heriz and represent the Harris family in this record, the descendants of their common ancestor Ralph Grammaticus I.  All these families are at the two Ecclestons due to earlier grants to their ancestors as the heirs de Albini.

Walter Fitz Swein of that record descends from Ailric, son of Goding, a successor of Earl Tostig, who held this region TRE.  Ailric granted (perhaps forced by royal command) vast portions of Lancashire, Yorkshire, Cumbria and elsewhere to the Albini heirs of his uncle Osulf, son of Frani.  These Albini heirs include the sons of Hugh Grammaticus, Ilbert de Lacy I and Ralph Grammaticus I.  I can only conclude that William de Albini must have been Hugh’s brother or perhaps another son.

You also mention Bailey, which family members provide the nearest DNA cousins of Harris Group 4 not named Harris.  I suspect the name traces to the manor of Bailey near Mitton, which was held by a branch of the family de Heriz that served as exchequer clerks to the king.

An ancestor Harris Group 4 was Richard Grammaticus de Camera, a grandson of Ralph Grammaticus I.  Richard married an heiress de Heriz.  The title de Camera, sometimes presented as clerici de Camera is an office of exchequer clerk of the king’s chamber, or privy exchequer.  The office de Camera was also held by Richard’s descendants, a branch of which assumed the name Chambers.

                                    Regards,

                                    Michael Harris

Hello, Michael, It has been some time since writing. Lately, I have been preoccupied with broken bones and a tornado. I want to take this opportunity to tell you that I have been studying your posting of June 9, 2024: HARRIS, HOLLEMON, LANCASTER, AND WHITE. Thank you for your usual good work. It is good to see how you ‘gather’ and present the history of family connections. Currently, I am working on the White family, and it will be most useful to me as reference material. I do want to point out what appears to be conflicting information where the husband of Ann White, d/o Ann and Thomas, is in question. Below are bits that I copied to show what I mean. In her father’s will, Ann is named Ann Holleman. Did she marry twice…to Josiah and to Arthur?

“Josiah Holleman, m. Ann (dau. of Thomas White and the said Ann (Moore) White), and sister of Avis White (m. john Harris), and Margaret White (m. Arthur Holleman)” “1.1.2.2. Josiah Holleman, m. Ann, dau. of Thomas White.” “1.1.3.1.4. Arthur Holleman, m. Margaret White, thus, he was the brother-in-law of John Harris.” “Arthur Holleman, who m. Ann White, sister of Avis White, wife of John Harris” “1.3.1.2. Ann White, m. Arthur Holleman”

I look forward to more postings from you. Sincerely, Gloria Buckles Reid ________________________________
