THE CONNECTION BETWEEN BRANTLEY AND HARRIS AND BETWEEN HARRIS AND HARRIS

What follows is a likely scenario that explains such connections. Any future research into this topic will have to be based on the fact of a very close association between between the families of Thomas Harris and Thomas Harris, who both died in Virginia, in 1672, and 1688, respectively. Failure to understand this will condemn the ‘Harris narrative’ to remain locked in a doldrum of beliefs. The pity is that the true ancestry of this Harris family is fascinating and illuminates the familial aspect of the colonisation of early Virginia, by such as the Harris and their Brantley kinfolk. Of that family, their origins have hitherto been little understood, but are equally as fascinating as that of Harris, and equally as important to the colonisation of early Virginia.

The first Harris ancestor who can reliably be traced is William Harris, b. ca. 1540, father of Richard Harris, who m. Elianor Bennett, on Oct. 6, 1594, in Wiveliscombe, Somerset.

The first Brantley ancestor who can reliably be traced is William Brantley, bailiff of Evesham, in Worcestershire; b. ca. 1530, father of Robert Brantley, who m. Joan Goodrich, Oct. 16, 1589, in St. Mary, Cheltenham, 15 mls fr. Evesham.

Neither family can be understood without their joint associations to the Moore family of Bristol being considered. The proposition that Edward Brantley Sr. married Katherine, sister of George Moore, would fully explain the continuous Brantley/Harris/Moore associations in Virginia.

It was vastly intertwined networks of families that conquered the wilderness and perils of early Virginia.

Ann, dau. of William Blake. I have previously detailed the descent of these Blake and Westbrooke families of Virginia from those intermarried with the Harris family of Wiveliscombe. That Thomas Harris and Mary Edwards had issue, Benjamin Harris, who had issue, Mary Harris, is not in doubt. However, to use her inheritance from her great-grandfather, Robert Edwards, as ‘proof’ that Thomas Harris had no sons by a previous marriage (to Judith Edwards), is not realistic. Judith Edwards would not necessarily devise lands to (of age) stepsons, but, rather to a ‘son and heir at law’.

1 Response to THE CONNECTION BETWEEN BRANTLEY AND HARRIS AND BETWEEN HARRIS AND HARRIS

  1. Gloria Reid's avatar Gloria Reid says:

Thank you, Michael. I find that this presentation is one of your best…easy to follow! You may be aware that my Harris line goes through John and Avis White Harris. Their son Joel Harris married Martha Barham who is descended from the Charles Barham who was sole executor of William Ridley’s will (May 1, 1671). Tradition says that William Ridley’s sister was Elizabeth, wife of Charles Barham (1626-1683). Now, more and more, I am seeing it stated as a fact. Have you seen any proof that she was William Ridley’s sister? June 10, 1674; Guardian accts Surry Co VA Bk2 pg63; Charles Barham was security for the estate of William Harris, orphan. I have not been able to identify this particular William Harris.

I have found It interesting to see Charles Barham as sort of a link between Thomas Harris (d.1672) and Joel Harris, the great grandson of Thomas (d.1688). Again, thank you for your posts. I look forward to them. Gloria Buckles Reid
