DEEPER HARRIS COUSINS

Firstly, may all reading this be safe and remain safe.

My personal view:

A key question when discerning how people of the same surname within a parish might be related is to find records of their land holdings. When I have described someone as “of Wedmore”, a very blunt term has been used. Wedmore parish consisted of various holdings, such as the manor of Blackford, held by Hugh Saxey, auditor to Elizabeth I. and James I.; Wedmore village, consisting of 200 households, held by the Hodges family, and the hamlets of Allerton and Heathouse, held variously, and enfeoffed to such as the Counsell family. It was through an intermarriage between these families that Hodges Counsell of Virginia received his name.

Relevant parish records are a composite of various manuscripts, and, consequently, contain missing data. For instance, the existence of a person can be deduced by a record of a baptism naming him as the father. If the baptism is in 1640, allowing for his age to be between 25-45, an approximate date if his birth can be assumed, 1595 -1610 in this instance. Checking parish baptisms between these dates may give the name of a father of several children, and it is more likely (90%) than not (10%) that he was the grandfather of the person baptised in 1640. Further, if the records show these people to be of the same hamlet, and marriage records confirm they intermarry with the same family, or those intermarried to that family, then a fair degree of faith can be assigned to the deduction. In what follows, 90% of relationships can be confirmed, and 10 % logically deduced.

Anyone descending from Thomas Harris, d. 1688, is, I suggest, a descendant of a Counsell, a Gardner, a Millard, and a “cousin” of Hicks, House, and Wall families.

In what follows, spelling have ben standardised; Hix to Hicks, etc.

The Cheddar Harris were probably of the stock of John Harris of Blagdon, juxta Cheddar, probably Sergeant John Harris. It is as remarkably predictable as it is sad that a John Harris who witnessed a deed concerning land adj. to that of Sergeant John Harris has been ignored (as the familial connection of the Blagdon Harris to the Derricks, to whom the dau. of Sergeant John Harris sold land); in the interest of making Sergeant John Harris the ancestor of those chosen as descendants of him by whom they chose. A relative of the Blagdon Harris was Thurston Harris.

A descendant of of Sergeant John Harris was Solomon Harris, a decendant of his matches the DNA profile of Harris Group 4 males.

After a hundred years plus or so, ditch the garbage.
