The greatest mistake made in the analysis of early English settlers of Virginia is to apply the concept of ‘randomness’ to their places of settlement and interactions. This is merely and wrongly to apply modern ways of living to a past that was alien to them. Neighbours in adjoining English villages had many interactions related to Wills and land. As B follows A, they were neighbours because they were mostly kin, and so it was in Virginia. Such a level of co-existence makes decyphering genealogies difficult, as closely intermarried families shared the same associations.
My view of a family of Harris of Somerset is that it was they represented in Virginia by both Thomas Harris, d. 1672, and Thomas Harris, d. 1688; seperate strands of the same family.
However, as is their right, several ‘Harris Hunters’ of old believe that the first Thomas was the father of the second, and have asked me to include such wide range of shared associations that tips the balance in that direction. They have also sent me a map that shows how close the land ownings of each Thomas was.
