1. John Westbrooke.
1.1. Dorothy Westbrooke, m. William Harris, Aug. 31, 1562, in Wiveliscombe, Somerset, 10 miles N.W. of Pitminster, the home of the Fulghams.
1.1.1. William Harris, born ca. 1563.
1.1.1.1. Richard Harries, bapt. Jan. 28, 1595, “s.o. William”.
1.1.1.1.1. John Harris, bapt. Feb. 18, 1624, “s.o. Richard Harris”. John Harris, transportee in 1650 of Richard Tye & Charles Sparrowe (Charles City). John Coggin, who witnessed the Will of Thomas Harris, d. 1688, had married the widow of Richard Tye.
1.1.1.1.2. Thomas Harris, d. 1688, His Will of 1688 names sons Robert, Edward, Thomas, John, etc., wife Ann. There is no mention of a son, Henry. The Thomas Harris of the Meherrin Rver region, d. 1729/30, names a brother as Henry. The logical deduction is that they were not sons of Thomas Harris, d. 1688, rather, the sons of his son, Edward, who died before their father (1734). The Thomas Harris who died in 1688 came to occupy land that had been John Sewards: April 27, 1686: Matthew Tomlin, 1227 ac., lower par. IOW Co. on borders of Blackwater, 781 ac. being part of 1200 ac. granted to Mr. John Seward, April 16, 1648; 448 ac. being waste adj.; beg. at a br. dividing land of John Turner and his daughter Mary’s, by William Westray, adj. Mary Turner, and Thomas Harris, to the bottom of Pig Neck; transp. of 9 persons. (B. 7, p. 510). Ann Harris, transportee in 1653 of Robert Tomlin; perhaps of relevance.

1.1.1.2.1.1.1.1. Edward Harris III,* b. ca. 1720, d. 1781 in Granville, NC., m. Elizabeth (dau. of Edward Lundy Sr., son of James Lundy Sr.), sister of: Byrd Lundy, who d. bef. Oct. 16, 1773, was a dau. of Joshu Claud Sr., and sister of Joshua Claud Jr. , who witnessed the Will of Joshua Harris, son of Thomas Harris, d. 1729/30. If Edward Harris III. was the nephew of Thomas Harris, d. 1729/30, he was a cousin of Joshua Harris. Joshua Claud Sr. had land next to the said Thomas Harris: Joshua Cloyd, 335 a. on the N. side of Meherrin river and on both sides of Herberts branch, a corner of Thomas Harris’s land, p. 225. The acquisition of land north of the Meherrin river was not just a haphazhard process. Many people settled alongside previous neighbours who shared Familial ties. it would be too long a process to give details of this regarding all of the following settlers, but a mention of James Turner may suffice as one example. John Turner, d. aft. March 25, 1705 in IOW Co., m. Mary Tomlin. Thomas Harris, d. 1688, placed his son George with John, whose spoken Will named named sons John, James, William, Joseph,* Simon and grandd. Families were entwinesd in an almost inpenetrable mesh, which furthered the interests of those involved. They were mostly near neighbours, as the case in England. When families of the same surname lived near each other, and their connection is unknown, it is reasonable to assume a familial link. “The answer is in the soil”.

The familial context this guardianship is not known, but an interesting supposition might be that the wife of Thomas Harris, d. 1688, was a sister of William Mayo, whose dau. m. Bridgeman Joyner.
THOMAS ATKINSON
The reason that the same man, Thomas Atkinson, witnessed the Wills of Thomas Harris, d. 1729/30, and Edward Harris, d. 1734, may have been because he and these Harris were related.
1. … 1.1. George Moore, stated to be “age 78 years” when he made his will in 1710 (Chapman, IOW Wills, p. 54). He m. Phillip Brantley was the son of Edward Brantley Sr., security for the estate of Thomas Harris, d. 1672. Rebecca George was probably the cousin of Eleanor George, 1st wife of the said Thomas Harris. 1.1.2. Ann Moore, m. Thomas White. 1.1.2.1. Avis White, m. 1.1.1.2.1.2.1. Joshua Harris. Joshua Claud Jr. witnessed the Will of Joshua Harris. B. 7, p. 23: Joshua Harris deeds to Mathew Figures for 10 pounds 300 ac., as Joshua Harris is now ‘of Montgomery Co., North Carolina. The land is adjacent land of John Claud, on Herbert’s Swamp, near Benjamin Clifton, and Samuel Westbrook, junior. Evidently, the Harris/Westbrooke family continued to be neighbours, as in their ancestral roots in Wiveliscombe.
1.1.1.2.1.2.2. Thomas Harris. It is the following line of Harris that seems to have carried on the DNA* of Thomas Harris, d. 1688, If so, it would be logical to assume that other Harris lines claiming to have descended from the said Thomas, who do not share the same DNA profile, have a false paper trail. What may be useful to consider is the d.o.b. given to sons of other Harris, such as of Robert Harris, brother of Edward Harris Sr. Dates given make it probable that he m. twice, and may have had stepsons from either marriage. *The DNA profile of a descendant is a match for Harris “Group 4” males). B. 2, p. 62: Thomas Harris junior buys from John Bird for 18 pounds 150 ac. on Buckhorn Swamp in Southampton Co., 1755. Wit.: Absolom Joyner, Henry Dawson, William Grisard.
Joshua Harris of Southampton buys from Thomas Harris of Granville Co., N.C, for 20 pounds a tract that is part of a patent to Thomas Harris the elder on March 1725 and by his last Will and testament, of Dec. 25, 1729, given to the Thomas aforesaid, being all of his part of 290 acres, 100 ac., more or less. 1753. Wit.: John Person, Joshua Claud, Moses Thorp, Sessions Blake. As before given: Henry Westbrooke, m. Priscilla Person (dau. of John), niece of William Person, who m. Mary Thorpe, on Nov. 10, 1757, surety Timothy Thorpe. Absolom Joyner was the grandson of *Bridgeman Joyner Sr., aforesaid;. Thus, there is a direct link between Thomas Harris, d. 1688, and a son of his namesake, d. 1729/30.
1.1.1.2.1.2.2.1. Solomon Harris, m. Millie Watkins, on March 11, 1778, dau. of John Watkins and Lydia Gilliam, dau. of Walter Gilliam and Sarah Foster, dau. of John Foster, son of Christopher Foster Jr. and Mary Fort. John Foster’s dau. Elizabeth Foster, m. John Watts; having issue: Agatha Watts, who m. James George, great-grandson of John George, uncle of the first wife of Thomas Harris, d. 1672.

1.1.1.2.1.2.2.1.1.1.1. John Harris.
1.1.1.2.1.2.2.1.1.1.1.1. … Harris. His test results with Family Tree DNA are a perfect match with Harris Group 4 males:

This would seem to be a benchmark in indicating Thomas Harris (through his son, Edward), was the ancestor of at least one line of Harris. The central point of association is the strong connection of Joshua Harris to those associated with Edward Harris I, his son, Edward Harris II; his son, Edward Harris III. In a typical English context this is definitive of ancestry.

Hon. Norfleet Harris, state senator from Hale county, was born in Hale, then Marengo, county, December 5, 1848. His father, Richard Norfleet Harris, was a native of North Carolina, and of English descent. He was the eldest of several children, and when a young man he brought his widowed mother and her other children to Alabama, and settled in north Alabama. There he married Miss Amanda Banks, a native of Tennessee. Her people were Virginians, and settled at an early day in Tennessee. They were laterally related to George Washington. Richard Norfleet Harris was the father of four sons and two daughters. (Brant & Fuller, 1893, Memorial Record of Alabama).
“The Harris Family belonged to Scotland-Neck, a fertile bend in the Roanoke river, in North Hampton county, North Carolina. They were respectable, well off, and highly connected. The Norfleets and Harrises were blended by intermarriages. It was a Miss Ruth Norfleet whom Brigadier General Hogan married in South Hampton, North Carolina (3d October, 1751). He commanded a brigade of regulars in the Continental line … Norfleet Harris, the ancestor of the Harrises about Courtland, married Mary Hunter in North Carolina, and after the birth of their four children, he died. Several years afterward Mrs. Harris married a Mr. Boykin, who lived but a short time. About 1822, Mrs. Boykin brought her children, and her slaves, and cultivated a cotton plantation, near Courtland. She was a small woman, of great cheerfulness and intelligence, and managed her plantation as skilfully as any man in the valley. She was the first advocate of “Woman’s Rights” I ever heard of … (dau.) Lucy Norfleet Harris married Richard A. Turner, a farmer in North Carolina. She was a very small and beautiful woman, with graceful manners, and there is very little change in her to-day. She had moved with her mother in a carriage over the roughest kind of roads, and proposed to her young husband to return to North Carolina on horseback; which they did, as she told me, with great comfort. A racing man said the horse had a good time too, for he only carried a “ketch.” … John H. Harris, son of Norfleet Harris and Mary Hunter, married Susan Smith, daughter of Gabriel and Mary Smith, of Limestone county. Mrs. Mary Smith was sister of William Banks, above mentioned. Mr. Harris was one of our most respectable and successful planters, and would have left a large estate to his children but for the results of the war. He and his wife both died acceptable members of the Methodist Church, South. Their children are: 1. Mary Harris, who married Frank Sherrod, son of Felix Sherrod, and grandson of Colonel Benjamin Sherrod … John H. Harris, a cotton planter, who married Susan, daughter of Mr. William Jackson, of Florence, son of Hon. James Jackson, who was so long State Senator from Lauderdale county…. The fourth child of Norflect Harris and Mary Hunter married James Cotton, in North Carolina, moved to Memphis, and after a few years moved to Louisiana. Their children were James, Joseph, Mary and Lucy.. Mrs. Cotton is dead. James Edmonds Saunders, Elizabeth Saunders Blair Stubbs, Early Settlers of Alabama, pt. 1, p. 269, 1899).
