THOMAS (THE PATRIARCH?) HARRIS, d. 1688 in Virginia

Several Harris researchers of long standing have asked me to re-calibrate my genealogical tables relating to the Harris family of Wiveliscombe and Virginia, to show a closer relationship between some branches than I have heretofore given. Their suggestion is as follows.

1. William Harris, b. ca. 1535, m. Dorothy Westbrooke, on Aug. 31, 1562, in Wiveliscombe.
1.1. Richard Harris, m. (1594), Elianor Bennett.

JOSEPH THORPE

1.2.1. Dorothy Fenn, m. Joseph Thorpe, Sr. (It is perhaps a reasonable suggestion that it was he was bapt. April 22, 1643, in King Weston, Somerset, ca. 12 miles from Wedmore, the son of a namesake. The Smyth family of Long Ashton, who held substantial land in King Weston, were intermarried with the Rodney family of Wedmore, and they with the Hodges of the same place. Their intermarriage with the Council family of Wedmore gave rise to Hodges Council, of Virginia, recorded here: Daniel Boucher (of Bristol), Will rec. May 1, 1668: To Hodges Counsell the younger …. Friends John Hardy and Thomas Taberer overseers. Witnesses: Hodges Counsell, and William Bacon. John Hardy was the likely father of (1) Debora Hardy, wife of Bridgeman Joyner (guardian of an orphan of Thomas Harris, d. 1688; (2) Lucy Hardy, wife of Hodges Counsell, Jr. Thus, the Joseph Thorpe of King Weston would have had the Bristol/Somerset ‘connections’ to make him a plausible candidate to be the husband of Dorothy Fenn).
