On Apr. 28, 1711, Robert Hooke patented 80 ac. in the upper parish of Nansemond, S.W. of Summerton Creek, on the corner of John Duke* (B.3, p. 119). This was the Robert Hooke who sold (on Aug. 6, 1692, to Jacob Darden*), 200 ac. of the 400 ac. granted to Robert Hooke.* John Duke was granted land on Sept. 28, 1728, lying on the N.S. of Meherrin River in Brunswick, beginning at a white oak on Reedy Creek (S. of Three Creeks), being a corner of William Duke’s* land. (B. 14, p. 59). Robert Hooke Sr. had deceased in 1684.

Jacob Darden, m. Ann, dau. of Nicholas Hill and Sylvestra Bennett, second-cousin of Thomas Harris, d. 1672. Their son, Stephen Darden, witnessed a grant of land by Hodges Counsell (grandson of Hodges Counsell), to William Edmondson. Rec. Sept. 28, 1724. Hodges Counsell the elder witnessed the Will of Daniel Boucher (of Bristol), rec. May 1, 1668. which named his “friends” John Hardy and Thomas Taberer as overseers. John Hardy was the likely father of (1) Debora Hardy, wife of Bridgeman Joyner (guardian of a son of Thomas Harris, d.1688); (2) Lucy Hardy, wife of Hodges Counsell, of Wedmore, Somerset, where the families of Counsell and Hodges intermarried.

1.3.6.1.1. William Duke, m. Mary (dau. of Thomas Green, son of Thomas Green and Burchett Lundy), sister of *Peter Green. Burchett Lundy m. (2) Joseph Turner (son of John Turner and Mary Tomlin), and br. of Mary Turner, who m. Edward Harris (son of Thomas Harris, d. 1688), having issue: West and Nathan Harris; he the father of Walton Harris.* As often given on this blog, the Thomas Harris, d. 1688, was of a branch of the Harris family of Wiveliscombe, 12 miles S.W. of Cannington.

1.1. John Turner, bapt. 20 Jun 1613. William Pitt, Merchant of Bristol, was the br.-in-law of Rice Davies, who married ist, Dorothy, dau.of Maurice Rodney, Esq., of Stoke Rodney, Somerset, about whom it was said: ‘he was carelessly bred and married to a smith’s daughter, from whom he was afterwards divorced’ (Mr. Collins). Dorothy Rodney’s br., George, was the father of Agnes, who married Thomas Hodges, Esq.; they being the parents of George Hodges, of Wedmore. (See N&Q, Som. and Dors., vols. 20-21, p. 226, 1932). It would seem certain that the Turners of Wedmore were kin of the Pitts. William Pitt, Merchant of Bristol, was the father of Col. Robert Pitt, d. bef. Jan. 9, 1674, Isle of Wight, VA. He was Captain of the Thunder, a merchant ship out of Bristol and a Colonel in the Virginia Militia. His son was John Pitt, who married Olive, dau. of John Hardy and Alice Bennett. She married 1. Giles Driver; 2. John Bromfield, and 3. Lt. Col. John Pitt.
1.1.1. John Turner, d. aft. March 25, 1705 in Isle Of Wight Co., m. Mary Tomlin. Thomas Harris, d. 1688, placed his son George with John Turner, whose spoken Will named named sons John, James, William, Joseph, Simon and grandd. Ann Everett; witnessed by Edward Harris, John Johnson, Jenkins Dorman, Wm Westray, and Mary Tomlin.
