GODWIN, HARRIS, KITTRELL, AND VINSON – from England to Virginia

Close associations between English families were repeated in Virginia/Carolina. By this measure, the Kittrells of Virginia were Cottrells of Winford, Somerset, closely associated with a family of Godwin, of Bristol/ Nailsea. Winford is 6 miles from Bristol. Nailsea is 7 miles from Bristol, the road between is dissected by Long Ashton. The principle of “continuation of associations” within kinship groups is paramount in understanding the social method by which early Virginia was colonised. Centuries of associations in England were repeated in Virginia; of necessity. In the bleak harshness of a Virginia winter, individuals strove to survive by calling on the combined strength of their kin. The aim of those on the outer circle of their (propertied-class) kinship group was to secure an advantageous marriage to a less peripheral one, with the ultimate goal being a marriage to a ‘central’ member of strong merchant/political importance (Bennett, Bridger, Pitt etc.). Densely woven networks of English second-cousins repeated and continued their associations in Virginia, thus, identifying themselves. Far more research of English records is necessary in order to achieve a first foothold of understanding.

Families of this account were of the Bristol basin, and became engaged in the Bristol/Virginia tobacco trade, aligning with Bristol merchants and seafarers, such as the Bridgers and (intermarried with them), the Pitts. The family of Joseph Bridger (a business associate of Thomas Harris, d. 1672), were a point of continuous connection between families, one example of this being Elizabeth Goodwin marrying William Bridger, the son of Joseph Bridger Jr. (son of Joseph Bridger Sr.), having issue: William Bridger, whose sister-in-law, Patience Dew, m. William Bryant. Their granddau., Elizabeth Bryant, m. Jonathon Kittrell Jr., the father of Rachel Milly Kittrell.

The Bridger connection to the Harris family of Wiveliscombe, Somerset, was particularly strong, running through the sons of Thomas Harris, d. 1672, to Thomas Harris, d. 1729/30, as accounted for in previous articles. The Thomas Harris who d. in 1672 was a second-cousin of Thomas Harris, d. 1688, and their families had numerous connections, and these lead to Robert, Richard, and Sherwood Harris of Granville Co. In 1749, Richard Harris was granted land ‘in the Parish of Saint John, Co. of Granville, on both sides of Poplar Creek beginning at an Ash on the S/side of sd Cr., N. 180 pole to a Hickory on Robt. Harris’ line’. Samuel Harris, son of Robert Harris, dec’d, granted land to Samuel Harris, son of Richard Harris. (Granville Co. Deeds, B. O, Oct. 17, 1805). This would seem to confirm a relationship between Richard and Robert Harris. 90% of English examples of such gifts would support these Samuel Harris being first-cousins.

A family of Jordan held land adjacent of these Harris, given in more detail hereinafter. On Sept. 4, 1750, George Jordan Jr., of Granville Co., deeded 200 ac. in Granville to George Jordan Sr. (his uncle) of Northampton Co., witnessed by Robert Harris. George Jordan Jr. was the br. of Arthur Jordan, who m. Elizabeth Turner, dau. of Joseph Turner, son of John Turner (and Mary Tomlin), br. of Mary Turner, wife of Edward Harris (son of Thomas Harris, d. 1688), and br. of George Harris. Thus, if Robert Harris was the br. of Richard Harris, and Sherwood Harris, ipso facto, they are most likely of the family of Thomas Harris, d. 1688, and sons of Robert Harris, son of George Harris. On May 6, 1750, Arthur and Elizabeth Jordan, of Northampton Co., sold 100 ac. in Isle of Wight Co., part of a tract granted to John Turner in 1686, p. 367. George Jordan Jr. had issue: Hannah, named in his Will, proved June 1792, wife of … Vinson.* George Jordan Jr’s wife, Patience Warren, was the sister of Mary Warren, wife of John Bowen Jr. (whose father witnessed the Will of George Harris), who witnessed the Will of Joseph Pope (in 1749), with William Harris, whose estate was appraised by John Bowen Jr.* William Harris was the son of the said George Harris, whose wife, Martha, was probably the sister of John Bowen Sr. Hannah (Jordan) Vinson was the sister of Benjamin Jordan, whose son, Warren Jordan, m. Sally Vinson, in Greensville Co., in 1805, probably the dau. of Joshua Vinson, see as follows.

It is strongly suggested that Robert, Richard, and Sherwood Harris followed their Jordan kin into Granville Co.
