The associations of Michael Holland of Goochland mirror those of Michael Holland of Pickthorne to such a degree that it is highly probable (by the underlying dynamic of the English kinship system – continuation of association), that the former descended from the latter. It is suggested hereinafter that Michael Holland of Goochland was the great-grandson of Michael Holland of Pickthorne. Concerning this, a mistaken assumption is that English parish registers contain complete records, wherehas they are often amalgams of manuscripts which are missing much detail. Therefore, the absence of a birth entry for Michael holland of Goochland in the Nene Savage registers does not disclaim him being born there, circa 1680’s.

(1) Sir Richard Ligon,* of Arle, Madresfield, Worcestershire, son of William Ligon Eleanor Dennis.
When Virginia records show Major William Harris as a neighbour of William Baugh it was not happenchance. He was the second-cousin of Henry Baugh, of Aldon Court, bapt. Sept. 14, 1578, in Ludlow, who m. Alice Holland, in 1602, dau. of Francis Holland, and Thomasin Russell, br. of Thomas Holland, who m. Alice, second-cousin of Richard Cocke, of Bremo; they the parents of Michael Holland, aforesaid.
This leads to the very heart of this Harris kinship network. Henry Baugh was also the second-cousin of Edward Baugh, who m. Constance Foliot, dau. of Thomas Foliot, Sheriff of Worcestershire, and Katherine Ligon, dau. of William Ligon, Esq., Sheriff of Worcestershire, and Eleanor Dennis, and sister of (1) *Richard Ligon, (2) Thomas Ligon, who m. This is a feasible suggestion as to the ancestry of Michael Holland of Goochland, who, given the extent of his landholdings, obviously descended from an influential family of Shropshire origin, the abode of many associated with him in Virginia.
He was a member of a vast ‘genealogical elastic’ of interconnected families, the combined force which stretched into the harshness of early Virginia, to conquer it.
