Recital: Lease of 19 April 1649 by Rd Cressett of Upton Cressett, esq., to Edw. Lye and Chas Didlicke of the tenement in t. of Meadowley in which Wm Symons then lived, with lands, etc. belonging, reserving any mines and quarries to Rd Cressett, and fishing, fowling, hunting and hawking. To hold from the death of Wm Symons for 99 years if Jn Croft of Hempton in Chelmarsh, yeo., Jn Cooper and Sarah Cooper, the grandchildren of Wm Symons, lived so long, paying £10 a year. Note that it has been enrolled. List of homage and admission of a tenant to Filthouse als Fyllies house in Chelmarsh, conveyed 7 December 1629 by Fraunces Croft to use of his dau. Mary Crofte and her heirs. She m. Mr John London clerk decd. Should she die without issue, the property then settled on Thomas Hem son of Simon Hem of Erdington and heirs. Mary’s death presented at last court. (April 3,1651, Shropshire Archives 1085/3).

1.3.6. Isabel Croft, m. Richard Overton,* Jan. 31, 1599. (Elizabeth Overton m. Thomas Nichols, Oct. 9, 1575). Richard Overton was the br. of (1) Thomas Overton,* who m. Alice Wood; their son, Thomas, was bapt. June 30, 1595.

It would be both reasonable and logical to assume that one of these latter Overtons was the father of William Overton (who m. Elizabeth Waters), of Virginia, and he the father of (1) Samuel Overton. (2) James Overton, who is recorded thus: “James Overton, 400 acs. (new lease), Hanover Co.; on N. side the S. fork of Elk Cr.; on John Raglin’s line; 20 Feb 1723, 40 shill’ (Nugent, C&P, vol. 3, p. 259). A James Overton appears in the Vestry Book of St. Paul’s Parish: “At a Vestry held at Mr. Wm Harris’s 9br ye 6th 1722 … Mr. James Overton was this day admitted a vestry man for this Parish, and had the usual oaths Administer’d by Majr Nicho Meriwether one of his Majesty’s Justices of the peace”.

William Harris, named in father’s Will of 1678 as an infant. He was involved in the determination of the lands of Thomas Langford, deceased, in a report dated February 26, 1731: ‘the line between Wm Bird esq. & Alex Cock cannot be found, Edward Hundley present for Wm. Bird, present Henry Hix for Mr. Sam’l Welden, Daniel Patrick, William Harris, Jr. … William Ford hath got ye Lands of Langford’s Orphans’. He is also mentioned in a deed of his stepfather, George Alves, to George Dabney, c. 1716, New Kent Co.: ‘As also Another Certain tract of land lyeing upon the North … line of … said George Alves’s Tract containing 300 acres lyeing in the Parish of Saint Paul bounded beginning at several marked trees of William Harris’s line … to a corner of several mark’d trees in the said William Harris’s Upper Line, thence along said William Harris’s Line to the beginning. Two tracts of land are part of a greater tract of land George Alves by patent 16 Dec 1714’.

In Virginia, George Lydall’s son John Lyddall patented land with William Overton, their properties adjoining in New Kent. William’s share eventually went to his dau., Barbara Overton.
