These notes were originally intended to highlight the connection between the Lancaster and Penny families of Bruton, Somerset. Sir William Berkeley, Governor of Virginia (4th son of Sir Maurice Berkeley, standard bearer to Henry VIII and constable of the Tower), bought the estate and the patronage of the Church of Bruton in 1541, where members of his family were baptised. Bruton is ca. 12 miles from Wiveliscombe, from whence the following Harris family derived, who intermarried with the Bennett family of that place, from which family came Richard Bennett, Governor of Virginia. William Berkeley was Governor from 1641–1652 and 1660–1677; Richard Bennett from April 30, 1652, until March 2, 1655. Thus, two branches of the Harris family, and that of Lancaster, had connections to the political elite of Virginia. Nathan Harris, whose Will was proved in 1793 in Greenville Co. was of this kinship circle.
Their connections to the Barhams came from theirs to the Bennetts.
What became apparent as these notes developed was the fact that Nathan Harris, who d. in Greeville Co. in 1793, was part of the Barham kinship circle.

Thank you, Michael. This rundown of the Barham kinship circle is fascinating to me, of course, because it is my lineage. You may be interested to know that the kinship circle continued through the years
Joel Harris and Martha Barham had a daughter, Sarah Judkins Harris (1779-1843) who was named after her great-grandmother, Sarah Judkins( b.1706 – ), wife of Charles BARHAM (1706 â 1791) .Sarah Judkins was the daughter of John JUDKINS and Martha.
Sarah Judkins Harris married William Middleton II (descendant of Robert Middleton (d.1687) of Westmoreland, VA) and moved to Illinois about 1831. Their great-great-great-granddaughter, Stella Middleton was my grandmother. She married Hayden Mathewy Pierce in 1902.
In the Middleton and the Pierce lineages, I find links to the Bennett, Mansell, Hodges, Brown, Pierce, Barham, Harris, Fulgham, and Kent families on both sides. Even more coincidental is that these families are also connected in various ways with my husbandâs ancestorsâ¦thus further evidence of cohesive families.
Many of my family names can be found in a search of a circle of counties in North Carolina â¦Guilford, Nash, Johnston, Franklin, and Wake. When I began to study family lines, I was surprised to find that my husbandâs families (Reid, Raper, Kent, Woodard, Brown, Epps, Weekes, Baileys, Hodges, Mansell) also brought me to the same counties. In fact, I found them attending and purchasing items at the same estate sales and serving on the same juries. There is no doubt that they had to be acquainted, and quite a coincidence that the families continued to be associated.
Two more coincidences: One of my classmates in college was Doran Barham. One of my husbandâs good friends was Don Barham. Don and I are descended from James Barham (son of Charles) who married Mary Thorpe. He, through James Barham (son of James), and I through Martha (daughter of James).
Keep up the good work, Michael. I love reading your studies.
