THOMAS OWEN OF HENRICO

The following notes concern a group of families (from whence Thomas Owen of Henrico), that had intermarried over successive generations, to a degree that the thread that ran through them was based on an intricate, and vast, network of various degrees of cousin. Put simply, this was the English kinship system, through which families arranged marriages to further mutual support and enhance their social and economic wellbeing.

It was such kinship systems of the “upwardly mobile” seeking to attach themselves to more prosperous and influential families, that colonised Ireland and Wales in the 16th century, and Virginia in the 17th, leading to the displacent of their native populations, fostering a resentment that is still apparent.

These notes are underpinned by a pronounced political element. The interconnections between the families of Bagnall (the military commanders of the English colonisers of Anglesey, in North Wales), the Breretons; the Cholmleys; the Kynastons (the stewards of the Bagnalls), and the Salusburys, was the basis for a host of (“satelite”) cousins to join their colonial enterprise; either in person, as soldiers or administrators, hoping to acquire land, or as merchants, trading between the port of Chester and Wales.

Anyone caring to select, say, ten people from those given hereinafter, and make a list of their 1st, 2nd, and 3rd cousins, would be amazed at the complexity of the associations they had in common, for the “modern mind” is alienated from the social structures of the past; yet, without a knowledge of the same, little progress can be made in genealogical enquiry. It remains a static enterprise, based on the (Hollywood) notion that people of the distant past married after meetings of chance, leading to romantic attachments. Life was too precarious for such flimsy arrangements. Marriages were arranged with all the forethought given by accomplished chess players, playing for high stakes in a game of life.
