ALWAYS THE REAL TASK

Just as important as genealogical tables would be those showing connections between various families which provided the ‘passageways’ by which people from various English areas came together (for mutual advantage) and intermarried. The connections between the Bourne family of Somerset and Worcestershire, and those of Bennett and Pardoe, gave rise to future associations in Virginia, encompassing the families of Brantley and Harris. To understand this is to understand all.

BOURNE KIN, the connective thread.

1.2. Walter Bourne, of Wick, Worcs.
1.2.1. Sir John Bourne, escheator, Worcs. 1546-7; m. by 1546, Dorothy, dau. of Richard Lygon of Madresfield.

(1. Richard Lygon.
1.1. Dorothy Lygon, m. Sir John Bourne.
1.2. William Lygon.
1.2.1. Elizabeth Lygon m. William Norwood, Oct. 18, 1569.
1.2.2. Margaret Lygon, m. Thomas Russel, of Strensham, Worcestershire).

The History of Parliament: the House of Commons 1509-1558, ed. S.T. Bindoff, 1982: A thirty-one years’ lease of the manor of Ombersley was granted, probably by Queen Mary in 1554, to Sir John Bourne. (Exch. Spec. Com. 26 Eliz. no. 129; Pat. 17 Eliz. pt. i, m. 19). By the Will which he made on 18 May 1563 Bourne provided for his wife, son, the poor of St. James in Bredwardine, Worcester, and servants, and left a ring of gold to Francis Allen. John Barneby sold the manor in 1649 to Richard Bourne the elder. (Feet of F. Worcs. Mich. 1649; Metcalfe, loc. cit.)

THE PARDOE FAMILY were tenants of Sir John Bourne, in Ombersley, ca. 20 miles fr. Bengeworth/Evesham.

John Pardoe v. Robt. Pardoe, John Bourne.: Manor of Ombersley. Touching right and title to lands in Ombersley, late of Thomas Pardoe, and to lands in Ombersley and Uphampton, late of Agnes Pardoe. Customs of manor. The Agnes’ lands called “Jerves,” Redenhurst, and Puckfurlonge, Cutnull, Conyngree, Cole, Orchard, and Lady Acre. (The names of Philip Pardoe and Richard Pardoe* are mentioned). Worcester, 1606-7. (E 134/5Jas1/East9).

The following reconstruction of a Pardoe family is (reasonably) ventured:

1. *Richard Pardoe, m. Anna Hemming, June 7, 1574. Probably closely related to Walter Pardoe, who m. Johanna Russel, Nov. 23, 1578; William Pardoe, who m. Ann Hay, May 18, 1579. It cannot be known if Ann Hay was of the family of Thomas Haye of Bengeworth, although readily assumed:

(1. John Brantley, bur. Oct. 5, 1592, m. a sister of Thomas Haye, June 26, 1563, in Bengeworth, Worcestershire. The Haye family were frequently Godparents of Brantley children.
1.1. John Brantley, bapt. Oct. 1, 1566.
1.1.1. Robert Brantley,* m. Joan Goodrich, Oct. 16, 1589, in St. Mary, Cheltenham, 15 mls fr. Evesham, dau. of Robert Goodrich, whose family are recorded in Cheltenham Manorial Court records, as tenants of the Norwoods. There was an ongoing association between a Brantley and Goodrich family in Virginia.
1.1.1.1. Edward Brantley, b. ca. 1590. Tickeridge v Staples. Plaintiffs: Thomas Tickeridge, younger son of Thomas Tickeridge, son and executor of Nicholas Tickeridge, gent. Defendants: … Robert Brantly, yeoman, Edward Brantly, his son. 1607. (STAC 8/283/22). It was probably this Edward Brantley who m. Ann Graveson.
1.1.2. Thomas Brantley, m. (1587) Christian Burley, dau. of “Gyles Byrleye”, bapt. July 16, 1542, in Bengeworth.
1.1.2.1. Robert Brantley, “of the parish of All Saints in the town of Evesham”, Will probated April 10, 1659, naming wife, Johan, sons Edward, Robert, James, Phillip, and John; and daughter, Ellinor. He requests to be buried in the Church of All Saints, which points to him having a high social status. Edward is his eldest son and executor, and inherits his father’s tenements and appurtanances in Evesham, with such devolving in the case of his decease to his brothers, in reversionary turn.
1.1.2.1.1. Edward Brantley, of Virginia, d. 1688, it is strongly suggested. It may also be reasonable to suggest that he m. Katherine Moore, sister of George Moore, and was the father of Joyce, b. ca. 1646, d. June 09, 1679, who m. FRANCIS ENGLAND, and Katherine, d.v.p., who m. (2) Robert Flake. On Oct. 18, 1669, they deeded land to George Moore in IOW, p. 201, probably Katherine’s uncle. Katherine Flake, dau. of Robert Flake and Katherine, m. (1) William Evans, who witnessed the Will of Edward Brantley Sr. George Moore was the first-cousin of Thomas Moore, who m. Elizabeth, dau. of Giles Elbridge, security given by George Moore and Mr. Edward Brantley. George Moore was also the grandfather of Avis White, who m. John Harris, grandson of Thomas Harris, d. 1688.
1.1.2.1.1.1. Edward Brantley Jr.
1.1.2.1.1.2. Phillip Brantley Sr.
1.1.2.1.1.3. James Brantley.
1.1.2.1.1.4. John Brantley).

1.1. Phillip Pardoe m. Margareta Barber, Nov. 20, 1598.
1.1.1. Phillip Pardoe.
1.1.1. PHILLIP PARDOE, bapt. June 3, 1622. He was claimed as a headright of John Scott, of Bristol, business partner of Thomas Harris, d. 1672, on October 9, 1665. As with EDWARD BRANTLY SR., Phillip Pardoe was of a land-owning family, and was not indentured to labour. Such as he and “Mr. Brantley” were part of a widespread manipulation of the headright system. Philip Brantley, son of Edward Brantley Sr., m. Joyce Lewis, dau. of Rebecca (George) Pardoe, half-sister of Phillip Pardoe, security for the estate of Edward Harris, d. 1677. Rebecca was the dau. of John George, the probable br. of Nicholas George, father-in-law of Thomas Harris, d. 1672, whose estate was appraised by Edward Brantley Sr. John George’s Will was witnessed by George Branch, husband, as given, of Ann, dau. of FRANCIS ENGLAND, on adjacent land to whom settled Edward Brantley Sr.
1.1.1.2. Thomas Pardoe, bapt. Feb. 7, 1624.
1.1.1.3. Margareta Pardoe, bapt. Aug. 26, 1627.
1.1.1.4. Richard Pardoe, bapt. Apr. 20, 1628.
1.1.1.5. Edvard Pardoe, bapt. Mar. 7, 1631.
1.1.2. Robert Pardoe, bapt. Aug. 11, 1596.

An understanding of how English (kinship) families associated in England is to understand who they were in Virginia. An understanding of the connection of FRANCIS ENGLAND to a Harris family (and others) of Virginia reveals much. This was always the real task. It is a shame that it took myself and others so long to realise this.
