REALISTICALLY HARRIS IN VIRGINIA

A branch of a Harris family of Somerset and Virginia can be traced to a William Harris, who m. Dorothy Westbrooke, on Aug. 31, 1562, in Wiveliscombe. He was most likely a tenant of “The Farm of Wiveliscombe”, held under the “Lord Farmer” (leasee of the Bishop of Bath and Wells), who, in 1600, was Humphrey Windham, 3rd. son of Sir John Windham, of Orchard Windham, in Somerset.

Wiveliscombe is situated eleven miles West of Taunton. In a charter of 1256, Wiveliscombe is spelt Wynelescombe, and was variously, Wenelliscombe, Wynescombe, and Wivescombe. It is now commonly pronounced Wilscombe. Antiquaries refer to medieval court records which show the main agricultural activities centred on cattle and sheep farming, and cider making, regarding which, by the 17th century, it was recorded that local farmers were “unkindly kind with their cider”, leading to the inebriation of visitors.

These notes do not record this family ‘in the round, but, rather, concentrate on the descendants of a Thomas Harris, b. ca. 1600, d. 1672, in Virginia. His branch of this family naturally, as the custom of the time, shared many connections to other families with their cousins, as part of the same kinship network. This has made it difficult to discern between them in Virginia. Basically, any branch of a family of this time sought foremostly its own prosperity through a ‘continuation of association’ with families that brought economic advantage to them. Cousins may have shared such associations as ‘secondary’ recipients, but did not have the closest of ties.

In what follows, the very closest and continious of ties of the family of Thomas Harris, d. 1672, to the families of Blake, Brantley, Bridger, Scott, and Westbrooke (n.b., ties shared by the sons and grandson of Thomas Harris, d. 1729/30), are given; which strongly suggest that Thomas Harris was the father of the Thomas Harris who d. in 1672; he the father of the Thomas Harris who d. in 1712; and he the father, by a first wife, of the Thomas Harris who d. in 1729/30.

1. William Harris, m. Dorothy Westbrooke, Aug. 31, 1562, in Wiveliscombe.
Dorothy Westbrookes was probably a sister of Henry Westbrooke, who m. Joan Upham, on Dec. 10, 1569. This connection provides a confirmaton of the “upward mobility” of those familial to the Harris family. As the Bennetts and Edneys, the Uphams were of the more “substantial” class of Wiveliscombe. They intermarried with the families of Hill and Boddy/Boddie. Elizabeth Hill m. Andrew Upham on January 29, 1575, and perhaps the same Elizabeth Hill m. John Upham on April 28, 1588.

On July 3, 1588, Thomas Upham m. “Jane Boddy”; who was probably closely related to “John Boddie”,* father of “John Body”, who married Christian Harkswell, on September 19, 1621; they the parents of John Boddie, baptised April 9, 1624. *Body v Yong. Plaintiffs: John Body of Wiveliscombe (Wylsecombe), husbandman, kinsman and heir of Luce Comberhedd alias Body. Defendants: John Yong and John Taylor. 1595-1596. (C 3/204/170). These Boddys were almost certainly the antecedents of those of Virginia.

William Harris and Dorothy Westbrooke had issue: William Harris, father of: 1stly, Richard Harris, bapt. Jan. 28, 1595, father of John Harris, bapt. Feb. 18, 1624; 2ndly, Robert Harris, who m. Eleanor Bennett in 1594, having issue: Edward, Thomas, and, probably, Robert Harris.
A Westbrooke descendant in VirginIa:

John Westbrooke, m. Amy, dau. of Christopher Foster, and Alice Forte (desc. of Elias Forte, of Wiveliscombe, who witnessed the Will of William Groves, with John Harris, son of Thomas, d. 1672), br. of John Foster, father of Sarah Foster, who m. Walter Gilliam. Their dau., Lydia Gilliam, m. John Watkins; their dau., Millie Watkins, m. Solomon Harris,*grandson of Thomas Harris, d, 1729/30.

John Westbrooke, appraisal by Nathaniel Ridley, Edward Brantley (his son, John, m. the widow of Thomas Harris, d. 1729/30), and Thomas Cook; wit. by John Person, Oct. 28, 1734. (B. 4, p. 25). Thomas Cook and Henry Harris (br. of the said Thomas Harris), appraised the estate of the said Edward Brantley.

1.1. Richard Harris, m. Elianor Bennett, in 1594, in Wiveliscombe, Somerset.
1.1.1. Thomas Harris, m. Judith Blake, Nov. 20, 1623, in Wivelscombe, He was a business partner of Joseph Bridger and John Scott, in Bristol. A Blake descendant in Virginia: Thomas Blake; he to (br.-in-law) Joshua Claud, March 8, 1753, 290 ac. adj. the N. side of Cocklins Pocoson and sd. Claud. Wit. Thomas Blake, John Parson (Person), Thomas Day (familial to the Bennetts), and Joshua Harris (pp. 463-466), son of Thomas Harris, d. 1729/30.

Judith Blake’s nephew, Thomas, held land in Virginia adj. that of Edward Brantley Sr. Simply put, Edward Brantley Sr. very likely m. a sister of Thomas Moore (b. 1632), who m. Elizabeth, dau. of Giles Elbridge, security given by George Moore (cousin of Thomas), and Edward Brantley Sr., thereby being br.-in-law of Priscilla Moore, wife of Edward Champion (the br.-in-law of Thomas Blake, neighbour of Edward Brantley Sr. in Virginia, and cousin of Thomas Harris, d. 1672, whose estate was ‘secured’ by the said Edward Brantley, and John Newman, the br.-in-law of Thomas Harris. Thus securities were provided within a kinship setting, and associations were repeated over successive generations:

1.1.1.1. Thomas Harris, b. ca. 1625, d. 1672, in Virginia, m. 1stly, Eleanor George, cousin of Rebecca George, mother of Joyce (2nd cousin of Thomas Harris*, d. 1712), who m. Philip Brantley* (son of Edward Brantley Sr.); issue; Edward Brantley; issue: John Brantley, who m. the relict of Thomas Harris, d. 1729/30.

Thomas and Eleanor Harris were in Surry Co. in 1658, where Thomas Taberer witnessed the selling land to Christopher Benn. Thomas Harris m. 2ndly, Alice Newman, by whom:

1.1.1.1.1.*Thomas Harris*, b. ca. 1655,* d. 1712., m. istly, Hannah Browne (J.H, may you r.i.p.): (1) aunt of Mary Browne, who m. John Drake, son of Ann Griffin and Thomas Drake; Ann Griffin being the uterine half-sister of Judith Edwards (2nd wife of the said Thomas Harris). (2) Cousin of Jane Browne (m. 1st., Robert Spencer and 2nd., Thomas Jordan), the latter being “friend” of Thomas Harris, d. 1672. (3) Second-cousin of Hester Browne, who m. John Brantley, son of John Brantley Sr., br. of Philip Brantley, aforesaid. (See Browne notes, as follow).
*He would have been of full age when he and his half-br., John, bought land from Joseph Bridger (in 1679) that had been that of their father.

Consequently, it would beggar rational belief if he had not had a 1st wife before marrying Judith Edwards, after 1701.

John and Thomas Harris, 365 ac., Upper Parish of IOW Co.; on N. side of the Ashen Swamp, near the head and on west side of Seaward’s Creek, April 20, 1685, p. 441. 250 ac., part granted Nathaniel Floyd, Nov. 20, 1637, and conveyed to said Harris’ father by Captain Francis Hobbs and his wife, who was the relict and administratrix of said Floyd, Jan. 13, 1659; and among other lands found to escheate; granted to Honorable Colonel Joseph Bridger, July 22, 1678, who sold to said John and Thomas Harris the Feb. 6, following (1679).

(1. Richard Bennett, who m. Charles Barham’s sister, was a close kinsman of Elianor Bennett, who m. Richard Harris, in 1594, in Wiveliscombe, Somerset, see previous notes. 1.1. James Bennett, witnessed the Will of Joseph Bridger. 1.2. Ann Bennett, d. 1708, m. John Goode. 1.3. Richard Bennett. “Deborah Portis, widow of John Portis, appoints Richard Bennett, son of Richard Bennett, Sr. and *Thomas Harris, her attorneys”).

1.1.1.1.1.1. Thomas Harris,* b. ca. 1685, d. 1729/30. He witnessed the Will of John Scott, b. in 1682 (grandson of the business partner of Thomas Harris, d.1672, and Joseph Bridger), who m. Joan, dau. of James Tooke, son of Thomas Tooke. (R. July 28, 1729. Wit. *Thomas Harris, p. 171). “Mr. Charles Barham” Exor, Thomas Harris (d. 1672), and Thomas Tooke overseers, witnessed the Will of William Ridley, who was the br. of Elizabeth Ridley, Charles Barham’s wife. Thomas Harris, son of Thomas Harris, is recorded as attending Quaker meetings at Chuckatuck with his br., John, Simmons (neighbour of Thomas Harris, d. 1729/30), and Thomas and Mary Tooke.
The continued association between these families points to an almost certain familial connection. The (almost certainly) many unrecorded sisters of these families m. within their kinship circle. John Scott witnessed a deed of March 26, 1711 (with William Bridger, son of Joseph Bridger Sr.), whereby John and Thomas Harris of the Upper Parish, sons of Thomas, d. 1672, divided the land they held in jointure, that being 250 ac. inherited from their father, and 115 ac. they had acquired from Joseph Bridger.

As given, John Scott’s Will was wtnessed by Thomas Harris, d. 1729/30; strongly suggesting that he was the grandson of his namesake, who d. in 1672, and that John Scott was a kinsman.

1.1.1.1.1.1.1. Thomas Harris, m. Sarah (dau. of Theophilus Goodwin and Elizabeth Wyche), and granddau. of Col. Thomas Goodwin and Martha Bridger, dau. of Joseph Bridger. Elizabeth Wyche was the 1st cousin of Sarah Wyke, who m. Richard Avery, of Bristol.
He m. 2ndly, Fortune Burrow (granddau.of Edward Brantley Sr.), and sister of John Burrow, who m. Johan Cooke, sister of Thomas Cooke, who, with Henry Harris, br. of Thomas Harris, d. 1729/30, appraised the estate of Edward Brantley, grandson of Edward Brantley Sr., and father of John Brantley, who m. the relict of Thomas Harris, d. 1729/30.
1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1. Solomon Harris, m. Millie Watkins, on March 11, 1778, dau. of John Watkins and Lydia Gilliam, dau. of Walter Gilliam and Sarah Foster, dau. of John Foster:

The test results for a descendant with Family Tree DNA are a perfect match with Harris Group 4 males.

1.1.1.1.1.1.2. Henry Harris. Richard Norwood – appraisal by Edward Brantley, Oct. 25, 1731). Richard Norwood was the husb. of Elizabeth, whose estate was appraised by by *Henry Harris and Thomas Cook (rec. Jan. 28, 1733, p. 386); the latter’s Will was witnessed by John Brantley (rec. Nov. 22, 1736, p. 186); who m. the relict of Thomas Harris, d. 1729/30. On July 25, 1737,

Thomas Burrow and Henry Harris appraised the inventory of Edward Brantley. Thomas Barrow Jr. was the son of Thomas Barrow Sr. and Elizabeth Brantley.

Families of this time can only be understood in the context of other families that they were connected to, usually as some form of kin, albeit the evidence of this in some instances as not survived. It is a case of ‘known unknowns’.

Connections to Bristol, with some repetition of the above.

THE SCOTT FAMILY OF BRISTOL
1.
1. Zachary Scott was of the Scott family of Kent, who became enfoeffed of the Gorges family. He, Samuel Boys and Edward Henden, esquires, were three justices of the peace, at Biddenden, 1n 1609. (QM/SI/1609/5/6). He was the br. of a Reginald Scott, father of Stephen Scott. (E 134/22Jas1/East34). In 1618, Zachery Scott’s son, John Scott, received his father’s tenantship. (Deeds of the Gorges family, May 18, 1618, Brist. Arch., 26389/7).

Other tenants of the Gorges included Maurice Rodney: recorded in a gift of William Gorges of Bristol, Esq. to his br. Tristram, of land on St. Michael’s Hill, formerly Maurice Rodney’s, Sept. 19, 1596 (ibid. 26389/2). Sales of land on “Mighell Hill”, by William Gorges, show tenants included John Cooke (ibid. 28960/1), Roger Watkyns, gent, and Hugh Watkyns, gent, in 1607 (26389/412).

The Watkyns were originally of Chepstow, Monmouth, Wales (ibid. 26389/530), and their family may have been from whence came a Watkins family of Virginia,* associated with those of this account, as follow.

William Gorges, Esq., of Bristol, was the son of Sir Edward Gorges (d.1565), and Mary, dau. of Sir Anthony Poyntz, of Iron Acton; and br. of Nicholas Gorges, Admiral (d. 1594).

William Scot “the elder” condemned his connection with the disorderly marriage of his son John, to Joan Tooke in Levy Neck Meeting House, she not as yet being a “Friend”. (US Quaker Meeting Records, 1681-1935). “Mr. Charles Barham” Exor, Thomas Harris (d. 1672), and Thomas Tooke overseers, witnessed the Will of William Ridley, who was the br. of Elizabeth Ridley, Charles Barham’s wife. Sarah Wyke.* The Wyke family in question are not likely to be those ‘fabled’ as deriving from a Cambridge educated rector of Sutton, whose son, Henry, coincidentally, had the same name as the Virginia settler. The Wykes were more likely those of the merchant class of Bristol, as all those associated with them. Those closely associated in Virginia almost invariably came from the same English ‘orchard’.
