Many assumed English genealogies in Virginia are like a hand of cards, chosen from a pack. The choice is guided by a handfull of Wills, in which some relationships are stipulated. It is the interpretation of such data that ‘constructs’ lineages claimed by those living now. Once constructed, they are repeated so often so as to gain an aura of fact, which they are not, and defended against other ‘constructs’ which rival them and cast doubt on them.
In the case of Thomas Harris who died in 1672 in Virginia, his two sons, Thomas and John, named in his Will, are ‘constructed’ to have issue whose lineage terminate, and as such do not threaten rival constructs.
(So some Harris researchers of old would have it).
Genealogical enquiry is nothing if not about questioning that which is claimed from a particular construct. It is nothing if it merely defends cherished beliefs, and refutes rival ones.
The following construct is, in my opinion, the only feasible way that two by name Thomas Harris (d.1672, d. 1688) can be linked in any consanguineous way. It has the advantage of males sharing the same DNA profile having a number of different ancestors stemming from the same family. However that may be:
BARHAM
1.Charles Barham. Mr. Charles Barham Ex., Thomas Harris, d. 1672, and Thomas Tuke overseers, were officers of the Will of William Ridley, who was probably the br. of Elizabeth Ridley, Charles Barham’s wife
1.1. Robert Barham, m. Elizabeth Clark.
1.1.1. John Barham, b. bef. 1711 in Surry Co., m. Elizabeth, dau. of Thomas Edwards and his second wife, Elizabeth Newsom. His Will was probated on July 16, 1771.

His Will mentions unspecified “plantations”, which can be taken as those he held jointly with his brother, Joseph, in Jamaica. (Abstract of the title of Joseph Hunt of Port Royal, Jamaica, merchant, to lands in Jamaica, Nov. 21, 1662. (Brist. Arch., AC/WO/16/1). These lands were part of the “Spring Plantation”, owned by John Elbridge, br.-in-law of Thomas Moore, the probable br.-in-law of Edward Brantley Sr. Copy of a recovery: (1) John Lilly and Thomas Coules, petitioners: (2) Thomas Edwards and John Clarke (Bristol Arch., ref. 046, 1684). HARRIS
1. Richard Harris, m. (1594) Elianor Bennett, in Wiveliscombe, Somerset. He was the son of William Harris, who m. Dorothy Westbrooke, Aug. 31, 1562, in Wivelscombe. Somerset.
1.1. Edward Harris, held land patented by his cousin, (Governor) Richard Bennett, on Nov. 4, 1642. This was adj. land held by Wm. Newsome, April 6, 1653, p. 51.
1.1.1. Edward Harris, d. 1677. The estate debts of Edward Harris, d. 1677, included: “100. Payd Coll. Bacon for rent” (land bought from Thomas Harris, d. 1672, Edward’s uncle). Edward Harris was a son-in-law of George Hardy, whose wife, Mary Jackson, was a great-granddau. of Edward Bennett, uncle of Thomas Harris, d. 1672. George Hardy’s land bounded that of Nicholas Hill (who m. a dau. of Edward Bennett), who, with Edward Brantley Sr., witnessed the Will of Thomas Harris, d. 1672. Edward Brantley Sr., had issue, Phillip, who m. Joyce Lewis, dau. of Thomas Lewis and Rebecca (George) Pardoe, half-sister of Phillip Pardoe, security for the estate of Edward Harris, d. 1677. Phillip Brantley had issue: Edward Brantley, whose son, John, m. the relict of Thomas Harris, d. 1729/30.
1.1.1.1. Edward Harris, b. 1664. It is at least problematical that he was the father of this Thomas: “Thomas Harris, the son of Edward Harris”, mentioned as such in the Will of John Gibbins, rec. Sept. 25, 1721, IOW. This could have been a son (d.v.p.) of Edward Harris, d. 1730. The emphasis: “son of Edward Harris” seems to demarcate him from a close kinsman, i.e. Thomas Harris, the son of …? (Thomas Harris, d. 1712?). Neither can any statement that the Henry Harris mentioned in the Gibbins’ Will was a br. of “Thomas Harris, the son of Edward Harris”, be supported – it is but supposition, designed to propose a connection to the Thomas Harris, d. 1729/30, whose Will mentions a br., Henry. The said Will mentions, as a legatee, Robert Harris, br. of Edward Harris, and Robert’s son, Mathew. The Exor. was Mr. William Kinchen. His connection:
1. Robert Ruffin, m. Elizabeth, dau. of John Watkins and Elizabeth, dau. of Robert Spencer and Anne Taberer, thus explaining the close association between Thomas Harris, d. 1672, and his “loving friend”, Robert Spencer. 1.1. Elizabeth Ruffin, m. Mathew Kinchen, whose Will was probated Aug. 23, 1736, Account estate signed by Ethelred Taylor and John Ruffin, Nov. 29, 1743, ibid., p. 482. Mathew Kinchen was the br. of William Kinchen Jr., heir in the Will of John Gibbins: Prob. rec. Sept. 25, 1721, IOW. William Kinchen Jr. m. Mary Gibbins, dau. of John Gibbins, and relict of James Adkins.
In other words, these people were entwined within the Bennett/Harris kinship network. Mathew Kinchen’s wife was a granddau. of Ann, dau. of Thomas Taberer Taberer, and sister of Ruth, wife of John Numan, br. of the 2nd wife of Thomas Harris, d. 1672.
Richard Bennett’s* bequest to “the wife of Mr. Thomas Taberer”* was probably to a sister or cousin. The Will of John George, recorded Jan. 9, 1678, names friend Thomas Taberer as exec. John Dalton was transp. by Nicholas George, Thomas Taberer, and Humphry Clarke. Thomas Harris, d. 1672, m. (1) a dau. of Nicholas George. *Richard Bennett’s first wife was Anne, who was Charles Barham’s sister (see Douglas Richardson, ‘Plantagenet Ancestry’). Mr. Charles Barham Ex., Thomas Harris (d. 1672) and Thomas Tuke overseers, were officers of the will of William Ridley, who was probably the br. of Elizabeth Ridley, Charles Barham’s wife. *Thomas Taberer’s dau., Ruth, m. John Numan, br. of the 2nd wife of Thomas Harris, d. 1672. Robert Spencer m. Taberer’s sister, Ann.
William Kinchen: Leg. Son Mathew, dau. Patience Taylor and her husband Ethelred Taylor; probated July 28, 1735. (B.4., p. 72). Ethelred Taylor and Patience Kinchen had issue: (1) William Taylor, who m. (2) Temperance Kinchen, dau. of William Kinchen Jr. (2) Kinchen Taylor, who m. Elizabeth, dau. of Jesse Browne, and Elizabeth, dau. of Nathaniel Ridley and Elizabeth, dau. of James Day, son of John Day and Mary Bennett (dau. of Edward Bennett, uncle of Thomas Harris, d. 1672, etc.), and sister of Sylvestra, who m. Nicholas Hill, who witnessed the Will of Thomas Harris, d. 1672 (cousin of his wife), and whose land adj. that of Edward Harris, d. 1677. (3) Ethelred Taylor Jr., whose dau., Nancy, m. Henry Peebles.
