Based on the presumption that those living today can authentically trace their ancestry to Thomas Harris, d. 1688, and Edward Harris d. 1677:
* Their most recent common ancestor, Richard Harris, was born ca. 1563.
* They were first-cousins.
* Thomas Harris, d. 1688, was the son of Thomas Harris, d. 1672.
* Edward Harris II., d. 1677, was the son of Edward Harris I., d. ca. 1662, who settled on land patented by his cousin, Richard Bennett in 1642.
* The estate accounts of Edward Harris Jr. inc. “100. Payd Coll. Bacon for rent” (land bought from Thomas Harris, d. 1672, Edward’s uncle).
* Edward Harris ii. was a son-in-law of George Hardy, whose wife, Mary Jackson, was a great-granddau. of Edward Bennett, uncle of Thomas Harris, d. 1672, and Edward Harris I.
George Hardy’s land bounded that of Nicholas Hill (who m. a dau. of Edward Bennett), who, with Edward Brantley Sr., witnessed the Will of Thomas Harris, d. 1672. Edward Brantley Sr., had issue, Phillip, who m. Joyce Lewis, dau. of Thomas Lewis and Rebecca (George) Pardoe, half-sister of Phillip Pardoe, security for the estate of Edward Harris, d. 1677. Phillip Brantley had issue: Edward Brantley, whose son, John, m. the relict of Thomas Harris, d. 1729/30.
*Edward Harris II. was the father of Edward Harris III., b. 1664.
*Edward Harris II. was the likely father of Thomas Harris, mentioned as the Will of John Gibbins, as ‘Thomas son of Edward’, to distinguish him, per English custom, from another closely related Thomas. The Henry Harris mentioned in the same Will is not designated as a br. of Thomas Harris; such a relationship is assumption.
*Thomas Harris, d. 1688, was the father of Thomas Harris, d. 1712,* who m. Judith Edwards, dau. of Robert Edwards
* 1. … Edwards.

1.2.1. “Mr. Thomas Edwards”, m. a dau. (Mary, Sarah, or Anne) of Michael Hunt, soapmaker, of Bristol, in whose Will, probated June 12, 1684, he is designated as “cousin” and overseer. Michael Hunt was a parishioner of St. Thomas, Bristol, to the poor of which he bequested £20. He bequested property to his “loving wife, Judith”; sons, Michael, Thomas, John, and Joseph, and Samuel, and to his said daus.; also to his brother, Joseph. Thomas Day, his “loving br.-in-law” was appointed executor of his Will, Sarah Jordan being a witness. His Will mentions unspecified “plantations”, which can be taken as those he held jointly with his brother, Joseph, in Jamaica. (Abstract of the title of Joseph Hunt of Port Royal, Jamaica, merchant, to lands in Jamaica, Nov. 21, 1662. (Brist. Arch., AC/WO/16/1). Imp. of Richard Holman … *Thomas Harris (d. 1712). Mr. William Edwards, granted 750 ac. in Surry Co., adj. George Jordan … granted to Ralph Creed, March 14, 1666. The designation of ‘Mr.’ means that those bearing it were of families of good social standing in English society. Deed to make a tenant to the precipe and lead the uses of a recovery to be suffered, Joseph Jackson to Thomas Edwards. May 16, 1684. (Bristol Arch., 09457/4c, May 16, 1684).
*John Davis, with Timothy Fenn, and William Lewer (witnessed the Will of Thomas Harris, d. 1672), witnessed a conveyance of land held by Thomas Greenwood, deceased, whose widow m. James Pyland. The delivery of this conveyance was witnessed by Joseph Bridger (business partner of Thomas Harris, d. 1672), Nicholas Hill (m. a cousin of Thomas Harris, d. 1672), and John George (uncle of the first wife of Thomas Harris, d. 1672), April 9, 1675, p. 552.
*John Davis, grandson of his namesake, aforesaid, b. ca. 1695, Will dated July 2, 1750, m. Ann Drewe, dau. of William Drewe Sr., who, with Thomas Harris (d. 1712), witnessed an indenture between Robert and William Ruffin to William Edwards,* on March 1, 1708.
*Robert Ruffin was the father of Elizabeth Ruffin, who m. Mathew Kinchen, whose Will was probated Aug. 23, 1736, appraised by Francis Williamson,* Thomas Joyner, and John Dunkley. (B.4., p. 126). Mathew Kinchen was the br. of William Kinchen Jr., heir in the Will of John Gibbins: Prob. rec. Sept. 25, 1721, IOW. William Kinchen Jr. m. Mary Gibbins, dau. of John Gibbins, and relict of James Adkins. William and Mathew Kinchin’s sister, Elizabeth, m. Joseph Jones, whose estate inventory was presented by William Kinchen on Sept 28, 1730. (B.3, p. 232), and whose Will mentioned “friends”, (n.b.) Francis Williamson and John Dunkley.
*Judith Edwards, probably m. Thomas Harris, d. 1712, as his 2nd wife. She m. (2) … Clarke, perhaps the son of *John Clarke, aforesaid.
I do not agree that Thomas Harris, d. 1688, of this account was a son of Thomas Harris, d. 1672.
I believe that the Thomas Harris who d. in 1729/30 was an ancestor of Segeant John Harris.
These notes are for those of different opinion, which will be included in my genealogical notes in book form, as “alternative narratives”.
It is impossible to understand English ancestries in Virginia without understanding their kinship context. What is the nature of what you study? The listing of multiple relationships between English colonists in Virginia is merely a consequence of what they did to survive (kinship intermarriage and consequent business alliance), to advance as the fittest to survive; the most adapted to their most challenging of environments, as in England of old, as in Virginia of new.
