FARMER AND POTTER

What follows are notes relating to a previous post – https://tinyurl.com/y8g8tqho – and chiefly concern a family of Farmer, of Cleobury Mortimer, Shropshire, with additional notice of a family of Potter of that place. It is probably worth noting the connection of Evan Ragland to the Walker family, and his connection to Robert Harris, as given hereinafter.

1.1.1.5.2.2.3. Johan Farmer, m. Humphrey Perkins, son of Humphrey Perkins (br. of Thomas Perkins), sons of Humphrey Perkins, Will dated July 16, 1550; overseer, Richard Newall; creditor, Richard Longford. (Langford). “Mar. 28, 1654, John, s. of Richard Langford, of the Betthouse, & Elinor, d. of John Hardman“.

These Perkins, as the Walkers, were a branch of those of Stafford, where the 1618 Will of Thomas Perkins of Draycott leaves a bequest to his son, Nicholas Perkins, br. of John, George, and Anthony. It may have been his grandson, Constantine Perkins, wh m. Mary Walker, relict of William Atkisson, dau. of David Walker, br. of (1) Sylvanus Walker, husband of Sussanah Tandy, (2) Hannah Walker, wife of Evan Ragland. Robert Harris and wife Lemenda, to Stephan Ragland, Oct. 16, 1742, 60lbs for 230 ac. Robert Harris late of Hanover Co. Virgina, now of Bertie, land on Roanoak River adj. to Ragland at Turbevills Run. Witn. P. Smith, Nathaneil Hill, Jn., Arnold Brown. NC Deed B. 5, p. 368: James Lee and Frances his wife of Edge. Co. to David Rozar. For 60 pounds current money of Virginia, 300 ac. on the S. side of Moratock river, as by patent to Seth Hatcher. Feb. 1, 1725. Farmer of Priseley in the parishe of Cleobury Mortimer in the Countie of Salop”, Will dated March 17, 1618, withessed by William Marston, vicar, presumably related to William Marston, vicar, “William Marston Clerke vicar of Cleobury Mortimer in the county of Salop”, Will dated Feb. 26, 1606, naming daus. Anne and Mary, and a son, Robert, and mentioning “Johan Cocke (widow) oweth me for tythes & offering for five yeres”.

1.1.1.5.2.4.1. “Thomas Farmer of Cleobury Mortimer within the Countie of Salop Blacksmithe”, Will dated Nov. 18, 1645. Lease for 3 lives, lease for 99 years. arties: Sir Francis Lacon, Margaret Ealfe, Elizabeth Hardman, William Badger, William Childe, Thomas Farmer alias Smith. 1641. (S.A.. 3320/10f/1-2).
1.1.1.5.2.4.1.1. Edward Farmer.
1.1.1.5.2.4.1.2. Thomas Farmer, bapt. in 1634, endorsed the aforesaid lease in 1659. He may have been the father of Thomas and George Farmer*:

In the marriage settlement (1695) of Edw. Cressett, esq., grandson of Robt Cressett of Cound, esq., and Eliz. Doughty of Betton, the following messuages are transfered: capital messuage of Robt Cressett and Edw. Cressett in Upton Cressett, several messuages and farms in Meadowley, now or late in the occ. of Thos Walker, Sam. Peach, Wm Walker* and Jn. Hanson; Several messuages and farms in Felhampton, now or late in the occ. of Jn. Mousle, Wm. Urwick, Tim. Jorden, Hugh Pugh, Wm. Owen and Wm Philpott. Power to be given in the settlement for Edw. to lease or grant … all or part of 1 messuage in Ley in the occ. of Geo. Farmer, and all or any other messuages in the Manor of Upton Cressett in occ. of Rd Edwards, Geo Farmer, Thos Farmer, Thos Baynham, Thos Walker, Sam. Peach, Wm Walker, Thos Cheese, Thos Pardoe, Martin Weale, Rd Corser, Jane Dod, Christopher Short, Jn Shipman. (S.A. 5460/3/20). Wm Walker of Meadowley, yeo. Lease of April 19, 1649 by Rd Cressett of Upton Cressett. Conveyance of Jan. 4, 1650 by Edw. Lye and Chas Didlicke of all their interest and term of years in the premises to Wm. Walker and Sarah his wife for the rest of the lease. Now for £40 Wm. Walker assigns 2 pieces of meadow and 2 pieces of pasture called the Oakes. April 3, 1674. (S.A., 5460/4/2/6).

Margaret Walker (sister of Edward Walker, as follows), m. Roland Holland, Sept. 19, 1636, in Ludlow. The 1561 administration of the goods of John Holland, of St. Leonard’s, Bridgnorth, was granted at Lichfield to bis son Roland Holland, and to his grandson, another Roland. Moreover. Francis Holland, of Burwarton, in his will mentions “my cousin Thomas Holland of Bridgnorth”. Roland Holland (the grandson), had a son, John Holland, who m. Jane Steward (Stuard), and was father of Thomas Holland, of Bridgnorth, who d. in 1649. His will is dated 1646, but was not proved till 1654 (Alchin 484). He m. Margery Harrison, of Stourbridge, and had two sons (inc. *Thomas), and five daus., inc. Jane, wife of John Farmer, of Bridgnorth, a widow in 1646. Mary, called ”Mary Stanton, widow,” in her father’s will, afterwards the wife of Edward Walker, Rector of Glazeley (Vis.) Margaret and Edward Walker were children of Richard Walker “of Wooton in the county of Salop, gentleman, deceased, by his last will and testament dated on or about the 25th day of September 1666, gave and devised as follows: “Item, 1 give to the poorest of the people that do not receive alms in the parish of Cleobury Mortimer … to be bestowed in bread, and upon every Christmas-day”. (Statement in pursuance of an Act for registering and securing Charity of Charitable Donations). They were siblings of Francis Walker, eldest son.
