FROM JONES TO HARRIS

The same English families had shared association going back centuries, replicating them in Virginia. You only have to know the A and the C of the genealogical trail, and the B can be deduced in general, like the middle of a jigsaw, with sides complete.

1. Roger Jones, grocer, of Bristol (Will probated Oct. 20, 1574), m. Elizabeth, dau. of Henry White, thus was uncle of “John White of Bristowe, gent.” (to whom he was the executor of his Will), br. of Gyles White. “Inventory of the goods of John White of Bristol, in possession of Roger Jones, executor. Also inventory of John White’s goods in possession of Gyles White, executor, April 4, 1559”. (B.A., AC/36074/61).

John White held land in Bedminster. White v Crofton. Plaintiffs: John White of Bedminster, gentleman, son and executor of Henry White of Bristol.* Defendants: William Crofton, Joan (Agnes) his wife, late the wife of the said Henry, and Thomas Abyngton, her brother. Subject: Money in a coffer, late of the said Henry. Gloucestershire. 1544-1551. (Nat, Arch., C 1/1282/38-45).

The Smythe family of Long Ashton were the landlords of the Taylor family in Bedminster, who became of Bristol and Virginia. Richard Taylor, bapt. Sept. 8, 1562, bur. Feb 27, 1610. Deed. (1) Hugh Smythe of Long Ashton, esquire. (Landlord of the Derrick family of that place). (2) Richard Taylor of Bedminster, sailor, and Katherine his wife. Bedminster adjoins Long Ashton and Bristol.

*Son of John White: Quitclaim. 1. John White. 2. Edmund Penson, John Harris (John Harrys, of Bristol, grocer, see hereinafter), William Edwards, Ralph ap Rees, William Wosley and 7 others (feoffess of St Nicholas). Roger Jones was the br. of George Jones: Quitclaim. John Mawdeley Geo. Jones and Giles White to John Smyth and Joan his wife of premises in preceding deed in accordance with uses therein specified. 3 seals. Nov. 2, 1555. (B.A., AC/D/3/48/b).

They were probable descendants of “Thomas Jones, coferer”, of Bristol, noted as a “parishoner of St Nicholas”, Bristol, with “John Cogan, mercer”, etc. in a quitclaim dated Nov. 4, 1452. (Bristol Archives (B.A), 40365/D/2/35). Lease for lives of the lessees. 1. John Burton, vicar of St Nicholas and John Cleyton and William Roberdes, wardens with the assent of the parish. 2. 1.1. … Jones, m. “Richard Moore, of Bristol, grocer“; see “Bill of Complaint brought by Richard Moore of Bristowe grocer against his father-in-law Roger Jones” … “alleging that Roger had sold to him the manor of Ridgwey of which he had subsequently been dispossessed by Richard Barkley esq. who with Mathewe Smythe esq. (of Long Ashton) claim title to the premises”. Feb. 11, 1587. (B. A., AC/D/4/13). Berkeley v Jones. Plaintiffs: Sir Richard Barkley, Mathew Smyth and John Sackefeylde. Richard Moore (Inquis. May 17, 1600), was one of the “parishioners of St. Nicholas”, enfeoffed of church lands by Robert Saxey. Sept. 20, 1583. (B. A., P.St N/Ch/D/4). David Harris and Robert Saxey bought land from George Harris of London, esq., as “parishioners of St. Nicholas” – “appurtenances commonly known as Knappes Chapel or St. John the Evangelist Chapel on the Back in the churchyard of St. Nicholas”. 1578. (Bristol Arch., P.St N/Ch/D/3). David and George Harris wers sons of David Harris Sr.*; son of *John Harrys, of Bristol, grocer, son of John Harrys, of London.

(This latter John Harrys was paternally a Salman, and was a descendant of a Smythe family of Essex that bought the manor of Long Ashton, in Somerset). *Award of Henry Brayne, Esq. and John White gent. arbitrators for *David Harrys and Thomas Walter :- (a) release of actions etc. to be executed by each to the other, (b) David Harrys to pay 26s. 8d. to Thomas Walter and bear costs of suit. (c) David Harrys to have possession of lands and tenements as in lease of June 23, 1517. August 13, 1556. (B.A., AC/WH/2/8).
