William Pettus was the father of Sussanah Pettus, wife of Thomas Graves, and the son of John Pettus and Ann Overton (dau. of William Overton, and sister of Temperance Harris, wife of Col. William Harris); son of John Pettus and Elizabeth Petty; possible sister of Thomas Petty. Oct. 13, 1701: Thomas Petty and his wife Katherine sold land in Lancaster Co., on Morratico Creek, which was land bequeathed to him by the will of his father Hubert Petty. (Lancaster Co. William Pettus was the br. of Susan, wife of John Ragland, probable br. or cousin of Stephen Ragland: Robert Harris and wife Lemenda, to Stephan Ragland, Oct. 16, 1742, 60lbs for 230 ac. Robert Harris late of Hanover Co. Virgina, now of Bertie, land on Roanoak River adj. to Ragland at Turbevills Run. Witn. P. Smith, Nathaneil Hill, Jn., Arnold Brown. NC Deed B. 5, p. 368: James Lee and Frances his wife of Edge. Co. to David Rozar. For 60 pounds current money of Virginia, 300 ac. on the S. side of Moratock river, as by patent to Seth Hatcher. The said John Pettus was the son of Stephen Pettus:
‘John Sydenham was succeeded in 1521 by his grandson, also John Sydenham, who died in 1526 leaving as his heirs his two sisters, Elizabeth and Joan, subsequently married to John Wyndham and Thomas Bridges respectively. ( P.R.O., C 142/45, no. 15; S.R.O., DD/WY 1/33). Under an agreement of 1529 Wyndham acquired the Bridges’ share, an estate which included the demesnes at Orchard, and lands at Curlinch, Snailholt, and elsewhere in St. Decumans, and at Cheddermarsh in Stogumber. ( S.R.O., DD/WY 8/A2/3–4) That purchase was the first stage in a process by which the Wyndham family became the dominant landowners in the parish within a century’.
