John Goninge, same year, was the part owner of (1) ‘The Supply’ (with William Pitt, Richard Holworthy, Richard Long, and Humphrey Hooke); (2) ‘The George’ (with Richard Holworthy, and Capt. Charles Driver); ‘The Dragon’ (with Thomas Colston); ‘The Fortune’ (with Francis Derrick); ‘The Abraham’ (with Humphrey Hooke, and Mrs. Butcher); ‘The Hope’ (with Francis Derrick); ‘The Dilligence’ (with John Barker, and William Pitt).

William Pitt was the father of Col. Robert Pitt, d. bef. Jan. 9, 1674, in IOW. He was Captain of the Thunder, a merchant ship out of Bristol and a Colonel in the Virginia Militia; father of John Pitt, who m. Olive, dau. of John Hardy and Alice Bennett. She m. (1) Giles Driver; (2) John Bromfield, and (3) Lt. Col. John Pitt. John Pitt and Olive Hardy had issue: Robert Pitt, d.v.p., who m. a. dau. of Col. Arthur Smith; her br., m. Sarah (who with his wife gave to George Hardy deeds for the land on Blackwater, in 1666, the deed reciting that Sarah and Mary (wife of George Hardy) were daus. of Richard Jackson and granddaus. of Alice Bennett; her husband being a cousin of Thomas Harris, d. 1672. Mr. George Hardy (aged 37 in 1670) appraised the estate of Edward Harris (d. 1677), with Edward Bechinoe (of Bristol), Richard Corsey, John Williams, and Richard Hansford. The Will of Francis Corsey, rec. May I, 1679, was witnessed by George Moore.

1. Hardy was an old Dorset name. William Hardy occurs at Charminster on a subsidy roll of 1327 and Henry Herde at Abbotsbury on a similar roll in 1332.

Mary Tucker (see Dorset Parish Registers, vol. 3), granddau. of Walter Tucker, merchant, who settled in Lyme about 1604; he was mayor in 1607. I noted your mention of Mrs. Butcher here, and you have mentioned the family before. I wonder if she would be connected to my Mary Butcher, the widow who married Robert Middleton in Westmoreland Co. VA. She used the name Mary Butcher in 1658, but by 1660 she was using the name Mary Middleton.
From my notes:
ROBERT MIDDLETON married MARY BUTCHER after November 1659 and before 12 September 1660 These dates are based on the court records which show Mary using her former name âMARY BUTCHERâ until November 1659. In a document* dated 12 September 1660, reference is made to MARY MIDDLETON, my wife, but she signed her name MARY BUTCHER.
