ADAMS/HARRIS/PERSON

Parsons v Symes. Plaintiffs: John Parsons and others. Defendants: Charles Symes and August Symes his wife. Place or subject: estate of John Harris, Radstock, Somerset. (N.A., C 7/279/108. 1662). This John Harris was almost certainly the John Harris, bapt. Jan. 28, 1623, in Portbury, as follows.

As shown in a previous post, Sara Harris, m. Thomas Symes, 10 Nov. 1622, Radstock. The same post gave a probable relationship between Thomas Symes and the descendants of Thomas Harris, d. 1688, in Virginia.

Sarah Harris was bapt. 1 Nov. 1593, in Portbury, da. of Robert, who was bur. 1 Sep. 1594; and was the probable sister of:

(1) William Harris, who m. Mary Jennings, 22 Apr. 1622, in Portbury; their son being John Harris, bapt. Jan. 28, 1623; a neighbour of Thomas Davis of Virginia, who m. Isabell Wallis, 27 Oct. 1624; his younger br. John Davis, bapt. at Portbury, Jan. 1612; and Mary Davis, transported in 1653 to Virginia by Richard Jennings. Edward Harris, d. 1677, VA., owed money to the widow of John Davis; i.e. Mary Greene: The inventory of Edward Harris, d. 1677, states that he owed money to “Mrs Davis”; almost cartainly the wife of John Davis, Mary Greene; da. of Thomas Greene and Mary Moone, and cousin of Martha Greene, who m. Anthony Fuljames (Fulgham), of Pitminster. whose son, Michael Fulgham, m. Anne Izzard; having issue (1) Anne Fulgham, who m. Robert Harris, son of Thomas Harris, d. 1688. (2) Susannah Fulgham, m. Hardy Council, son of Hodges Council Jr. and Lucy Hardy. In IOW Court, January 11, 1672, Thomas Tooke (associated with Thomas Harris, d. 1672), as attorney, calls John Davis “his loving brother”.

(2) Thomas Harris, who m. Sara Pope, 2 May 1622, in Radstock. She was very likely to have been related to:

(1) Robert Pope, who m. Joan Blake, 6 Feb. 1622, in Wedmore; and she to Judith Blake, who m. Thomas Harris*, November 20, 1623 (he probably dying in Virginia, in 1672), at Wivelscombe, son of Elianor Bennett and Richard Harris, son of William Harris, who m. Dorothy West, Aug. 31, 1562, at Wivelscombe. *Second-cousin of Lucy Hardy, who m. Hodges Council; and her sister, who m. Richard Jackson; their da., Mary Jackson, m. Capt. George Hardy.

(2) Mary Pope, who m. Robert Lansdowne of Radstock, 19 Jun. 1637, in Wedmore.

John Tooke of Surry County; his will proved 15 February 1720, appointed John Parson and William Ezell executors and John Parson, Samuel Sebrell, and James Pyland as trustees. The Tooke family were tenants of the Symes (in Barwick, Somerset); the Symes being landlords of the Fulghams, in Pitminster. James Pyland was a headright of Francis England in 1642. (Nugent vol. 1, p. 140).

John Parson/Person was overseer of of the will of Francis England, of Blackwater, IOW, 13 May 1677. On 9 June 1666, George Hardy (overseer of will of Edward Harris, d. 1677) deeded Francis England 100 ac. where George Branch formerly lived. Thomas Carter later sold John Parsons 56 ac. which were formerly owned by George Branch, who was the son-in-law of Francis England and Joyce, da. of Robert Flake.

The kinship connection of the Brantleys to such as the Councils was based on Hardy Council’s da., Mary, being the wife of William Brantley, son of Edward Brantley. The Hodges/Council family were of Wedmore, Somerset.

Thomas Harris, d. 1672, received a grant of 40 ac. in Iow, Aug. 14, 1652, at the head of Pagan Creek, bounded with his own land on the northeast, Francis Smith on the southwest, Thomas Pritchard on the southeast, and John Davis, as follows, on the northeast. John Davis, ob. ante 28 June 1714, m. Mary Green (da. of Thomas Greene and Mary Moone); ob. ante 23 Jan. The inventory of Edward Harris, d. 1677, shows him to owe money to a “Mrs. Davis”. John Davis, with wife Mary, sold to William Exum, 150 ac. in IOW (May 1659), witnessed by Thomas Moone and John Burwell. In IOW Court, January 11, 1672, Thomas Tooke, as attorney, calls him “his loving brother” – either a religious or a lineage relationship John and Mary Davis had issue: Sarah Davis, d. ob. ante 6 Jan. 1720, m. Nicholas Fulgham; of the family intermarried with that of Thomas Harris, d. 1688.

1.2.5.1. Henry Luckcox, Jane Luckcox, James Luckcox, Thomas Luckcox, Edith Luckcox. John Harris, m. Charity Luckox, 13 Nov. 1587, Mells; her probable sister, Joan Luckox, m. John Hill, 4 Nov. 1578, in Mells. John Harris and Charity Luckox had issue, (1) Elizabeth Harris, bapt. 25 Oct. 1590, Mells, “da. of John”; who m. George Hill, 27 Jan. 1619; (2) Thomas Harris, bapt. 24 Mar. 1600, Mells, very likely he who m. Alice West, 1635, in Nunney, the parents of Thomas Harris, bapt. 14 Aug. 1636, in Nunney; brother of John Harris, bapt. 1640, in Nunney, who m. Margaret Beard, in 1664. The Symes family were intermarried with the family of Hill; the Beards with that of Bennett. A cousin of these Harris was a cousin of the Bennetts (and, as said, the Blakes) of Virginia; one of whom, Alice Bennett, m. John Hardy. Nugent, C&P vol. 1, p. 569: Mr. John Hardie 1150 acres IOW Co., 5 June 1666. Beginning at upper corner tree of Mathew Tomlin’s old land, running SSE by Wm. Westwrayers land &c. SW on Mathew Tomlins new land. John Hardy m. 2. Alice Tucker, widow of Arthur Allen. Alice Bennett’s sister m. Richard Jackson; their da., Mary Jackson, m. Capt. George Hardy, appraiser of the estate of Edward Harris, d. 1677. I would suggest that Nicholas Hill, who, on 30 Sept. 1664, patented 750 ac. in the Upper Parish, part of the estate of Edward Bennett, was a son of the said George Hill and Elizabeth Bennett. The John Harris, bapt. 1587 in Mells, was he (by process of elimination) who m. Mary Tomlin, 9 November 1620, in Mells, being bur. there in 1637.

Many of these families had intermarried for centuries. Everyone was the second cousin of everyone.
