Sir Fulke Greville of Beauchamp’s Court, m. (1526) Elizabeth Willoughby, b. Apr. 28, 1510, their dau., Mary Geville, m. William Harris Esq., Sept. 11, 1553, at St Dunstan In the West, London. She was the sister of Edward Greville, d. July 27, 1615, who m. Jane Grey, c. 1570, their issue including 1. Frances Greville, 1578-1633, who m. 1. Nathaniel West (Lt. Col.) of Virginia, 2. Abraham Piersey; 3. Samuel Matthews, Gov. of Virginia.
The settlement of ‘West and Shirley Hundreds’ was established by a private corporation, of which the brothers of Lord Delaware, Capt. Francis West, John West, and Capt. Nathaniel West, were leading members. Westover became a distinct Hundred in 1629, when it was represented in the House of Burgesses by Christopher Woodward. In February, 1631, John Flood represented Westover, ‘Flowerdew Hundred’, and Weyanoake. The last representative of Westover, Capt. Paulet, became the owner of the estate, receiving a patent from the governor, January 15, 1637.
In 1631-32 Capt. Paulet was appointed one of the commissioners or justices for the upper precincts of Charles City and Henrico, and in 1641, a member of the Virginia Council. He died in 1644, without issue. The grant made to him was for the personal adventure of his brother, Chidiock, and for transportation of 38 persons into the Colony. His will, dated January 12, 1643, mentions his other brother, ‘Sir John, Lord Pawlett‘ … his God-children Wm. Harris, John Woodson, Tho. Aston, Thomas Fludd, Henry Richley, John Bishop, Tho. Woodward, Tho. Boyse, Tho. Poythers, and William Bayle, his loving friends Mr George Menefie and Mr Walter Aston. Such terms as ‘loving friends’ at this time often represented a familial relationship, and ‘brother’ could have a wider meaning. The Menefies purchased the manor of Northcote, Devon, after the dissolution, and were neighbours there of the Drake family, as they were in Musbury, Devon, see the Will of William Menefie of Musbury, Devon, May 8, 1548.
12a. Arthur Harris, of Hayne & Kenegie, Sheriff of Cornwall (b. by 1561, d. May 16, 1628), m. Margaret Davils, d. o. John Davils and Mary Malet. John Davils was the nephew of Amy Davils, who m. Richard Dennys, of Exeter; younger br. of Sir Thomas Dennys, who m. Anne Paulet, d. o. William Paulet, 3rd Marquess of Winchester.

Their dau., Gertrude Dennis, m. 1. John Arundell, d. 1580, of Trerice, Cornwall, second son and heir of Sir John Arundell, 1495–1561, a commander of the Royal Navy during the reigns of Henry VIII and Edward VI, and twice Sheriff of Cornwall, by his second wife, Juliana Erissey, d. o. James Erissey, as follows.
Robert Dennys m. 2., 1555, Margaret Godolphin, d. o. Sir William Godolphin, of Godolphin in Cornwall, their issue including: 1. Sir Thomas Dennys II., eldest son and heir, who m. Anne Paulet, d. o. William Paulet, 3rd Marquess of Winchester; 2. Phillipa Dennys (d.1655), wife of William Drake, d. 1625, of Wiscomb, in the parish of Southleigh, Devon, a s. o. Robert Drake of Wiscomb, a s. o. John Drake, d.1558, of Ash, Musbury, Devon, where was also situated a family of Menefie, as given.
The point can be readily made, that the issue of William Harris of Hayne had links to the family of Captain Thomas Paulet of Virginia, whatever the particulars of his parentage.

The family of Harris of Wortham, in Lifton, and afterwards also of Pickwell, in Georgeham, was a cadet branch of Harris of Hayne; deriving from Thomas Harris of The Mount, St. Hilary, co. Cornwall, third son of Arthur Harris of Hayne (Devon and Cornwall Notes and Queries, vol. 7, 1913). Although the following marriage settlement concerns a later descendant, it is nevertheless important in the insight it gives into the tremendous wealth of this Harris family; it also allows us to consider those named Harris of unknown lineage to be of the Hayne branch through association to ‘Hayne’ holdings. Of no little relevance to events in Virginia may be the fact that Captain Oliver Harris, great-uncle of Thomas, above, was described in his will of 1595 as a ‘gent’ of Tregender in Ludgvan‘ (PCC, fol. 45, Scott); a parish held by the Paulets, through a marriage to an heiress of Willoughby. (See J.H. Matthews, a History of the Parishes of St Ives, Lelant, Towednack, and Zennor, in the County Of Cornwall, p. 42, 1892). The same source states that the family of Godolphin had considerable influence in this area.

The manor of Ludgvan-Lees was granted by Richard Earl of Cornwall to the family of Ferrers, from whom it passed, by successive female heirs, to those of Champernown and Willoughby (Lord Brooke). The coheiresses of the latter brought it to William Paulet, 3rd Marq. Winchester, in 1580, of Legh Powlet in Devonshire (ibid.). There are some discrepancies betw. the traditional account of the Butlers of Birch Hall, Essex, and the Butlers associated with William Claiborne in Virginia, however, this may only amount to confounding cousins, so nothing material is lost, and the fact remains that these Butlers were associated with the Harris family of Maldon. What is more contentious, however, is the proposition that the William Harris associated with William Claiborne in Virginia was of the Harris family of Essex, and not of their Devonshire cousins.

William Harris and John Phipps were associated in Virginia, and in 1674 the son of John Phipps patented 1100 acres north of the William Harris property (Nugent ii., p. 152). It is not known if this Robert Harris was associated with the said William Harris: ‘William Whittacar, 400 acs. in James City & Yorke Co.; Apr. 20, 1680, p, 25. Near Wm. Paulett’s land; adj. Tho. Buck, Robt. Harris: Mrs. Higgenson; & Col. Tho. Pettus’; nor whether the Robert Harris who m. Mary Starke was associated with either of his namesakes.
The above can not be understood without reading other posts that detail the close associations of the Harris families of Devon and Essex. If, instead of treating these families as distinct entities, a wider net can be gathered in that would provide more stock in Virginia than is immediately obvious.
The association of the Tremayne family to this Harris kinship group may have some bearing to the Harris family of Southwark, London, who intermarried with a family of that name.
